THE weather bomb created a nightmare at Mahia on Saturday, with reports of roofs blowing off, windows blown in, walls collapsing, outdoor furniture and fittings smashed and maize crops flattened.
One roof was picked up and hurled 50 metres, wiping out a pole in flight and landing on a large pleasure boat parked on the foreshore, said Mahia resident Bill Shortt.
The strongest wind gusts were over 100kmh at Mahia Beach, while high up on the peninsula winds of 140kmh were recorded.
