Severe Weather Forecast issued by the Metservice:
A trough of low pressure has moved onto central and northern New Zealand Sunday morning. A frontal rainband embedded in the trough is expected to move across the Bay of Plenty this afternoon and become slow moving over Gisborne Sunday night. Heavy rain is expected in Gisborne from Sunday night until late Monday afternoon of early Monday evening. 130-180mm of rain is likely to accumulate in the ranges of Gisborne during this time, mainly north of Gisborne City, while 70-110mm could accumulate near the coast.
People are advised that the heavy rain could cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, surface flooding and slips, and make driving hazardous.
Heavy rain has eased on Mount Taranaki and in Nelson early Sunday morning and is now easing in Marlborough, although occasional rain is still possible in parts of Nelson and Marlborough during today.
