On this page there is also photo slides taken inside by the Army robot. Christchurch has lost so many old beautiful Churches from September and some will never be replaced. We just need word now about the Catholic Cathedral which was absolutely beautiful and very badly damaged in the quakes - which is also an icon of Christchurch. Don't know if they have asked the Pope for some money - but they should to get that one fixed up. I have been to midnight mass inside of that one many times as a teenager and you are in awe each time you enter the building it is just so magnificent. Mind blowing actually and you are scared to practically breathe in there - that is the feeling you get each time you go inside it. Heres hoping.

Agree - I think the church will have a battle on their hands on this one. I get the feeling that the sentiment in ChCh and the lack of consultation before the destruction of history occurs is reaching boiling point. The cathedral has always been an iconic building for Chch, and now it will become the building that represents the removal of all that history, so in a sense it is still serving a purpose, while the discussion continues. It will be interesting to see what happens here
I saw on TV tonight that it was being reduced in height rather than being completely removed. Presumeably though if that is what happens, what will the Anglican church do with a 2 story building in the middle of town?

I agree totally with you and think most of Christchurch will be up in arms over that and trust that sense will prevail and more experts consultation will be got. That to me was Christchurch and seeing that a lot of the old buildings have now been pulled down they need to spend or put towards the Cathedral that money to save it.
She also mentioned on TV tonight that the "cardboard cathedral" will also be going up in the meantime - that is at a cost of $4 million dollars!!!!!! Cardboard????
The Arts centre is being restored and that was pretty badly damaged.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes with the Cathedral and think she may have upset a lot of people.
