New Zealand is on tsunami watch after a powerful earthquake in the Solomon Islands.

The magnitude 8.0 quake was 5.8 kilometres deep.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Fiji, and Kiribati.

A tsunami watch is in effect for countries including New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Australia, the Cook Islands, and Indonesia.

It's not yet known whether a tsunami has been generated and the warning is based only on the size of the earthquake.

The Ministry of Civil Defence has issued a Tsunami Potential Threat to New Zealand after a strong earthquake off the Solomon Islands.

The tsunami advisory is for North Cape, Auckland west, East Cape, Gisborne, Auckland east, New Plymouth, Wellington.

The ministry says people in coastal areas should note that a tsunami is possible - and listen to the radio or TV for updates.

3.30pm: A Solomon Island's hospital director says villages have been destroyed by a magnitude eight earthquake which struck the region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says on its website a tsunami has been generated and may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts.

The Solomon Islands' National Disaster Management office has advised those living in low-lying areas, especially Makira and Malaita, to move to higher ground.

Title: Updates on Solomon Island earthquake and tsunami (+ map)

3:57pm: Many pacific nations are under tsunami warning - but New Zealand is under a watch.

Kanoa Koyanagi from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre explains what that means.

"That means we're going to continue monitoring the situation and because they're in a watch, they're still more than three hours away from expected arrival of the tsunami."

4:03pm: Australia's earthquake monitoring agency and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre say a wave measuring 90 centimetres has been recorded at Lata, on the main Santa Cruz island of Ndende.

Geoscience Australia seismologist David Jepsen says they know that a tsunami has been created after the 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Solomon Islands this morning.

He says depending on the location of the quake, bigger waves could hit elsewhere. Mr Jepsen says it's a big earthquake in terms of just the shaking.

NZ Under Warning.

Taranaki Civil Defence has issued a tsunami warning for Taranaki after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck east of the Solomon Islands this afternoon.
The quake was a shallow 5.8km deep and the epicentre was 347km east of Kira Kira in the Solomon Islands.
The tsunami is expected to arrive on the Taranaki coastline at around 7.30pm,  coinciding with full tide.
