Temps rocket up - Did someone say a chance of nearing 40?

Very high temperatures are in place over parts of the country this afternoon, especially over the south.

36 degrees was recorded in Rangiora at midday, 39 in Oxford and yesterday Dr Jim Salinger thought 40 degrees could be topped in eastern areas however he has since taken that back.

WeatherWatch.co.nz has maintained that temperatures would remain in the low to mid thirties with an oustide chance of going slightly higher.

"It is very hot today in Canterbury" says Weather Analyst Richard Green "and with little wind in places it seems even hotter. This week the nor' easter has kept it relatively pleasant but today it's a different story under cloudless skies and light breezes" he said.

The main centres in the north aren't recording anything out of the ordinary but the southern cities are certainly cooking.

Auckland  24
Tauranga  24
Hamilton  23
Wellington  23
Christchurch  32
Dunedin Airport  28

Tomorrow looks like another hot day is expected for eastern areas with the high 20's and low 30s again being achieved relatively easily.

Dollars to doughnuts the 39C is not a reliable reading.

The only Rangiora site i could find was this one Rangiora,
  North Canterbury on weather underground.
And it only got to 30.6c.

And the said it was our warmest day this summer but it only got to 33c today.
On the 17 December Niwa says we got 33.3c.

Rupert where would you get an accurate reading from - maybe you could tell me what your records show for Rangiora today please.
I would also like to hear what West Melton is too please.

For Rangiora - which might have hit 36, though doubtful - I'd have to wait till the daily data reaches NIWA's databases in a few days' time (Metservice doesn't have it on their main page). I'm not aware of there being any station at Oxford which gets monitored by MetService or NIWA, so no way of getting an answer for that one.

For West Melton, you could compare notes with John Gaul.

You have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 right? That should give pretty good readings

It sure does David but wondered if Rupert had other sites that he would recommend that I could check with - but obviously not for West Melton - only John Gault who is just down the road from me.
It will be interesting to see the results/comparison  regarding the Rangiora one though and he uses the NIWA site and wonder where the location in Rangiora is for that one too.

A couple of observers on another forum got readings of about 31C at Rangiora, which is well in line with other nearby regional readings for the day.

The NIWA EWS site at Rangiora, according to the notes in CliFlo, is at the Southbrook oxidation ponds, eastern end (opened 1999). The data for yesterday might be ready later today, will post when I see it.

Edit: Rangiora max was 31.9C. 31.2C at Mt Cook village, pretty warm for there.  8)
