Canterbury sweltered in a scorcher of a weekend with temperatures reaching 35.9 degrees at Rangiora and Blenheim , pushing the fire risk up and adding to the woes of farmers struggling in a serious drought. About ten people were treated for heat exhaustion.The highest temperature recorded in Christchurch was 41.6 degrees in February 1973.
