Stuff reports snow on Lindis Pass and surrounding hills of Timaru
In Central Otago this morning, an operation is underway to get people out of the Lindis Pass after a heavy snowfall.
Several cars had to be abandoned in the area and a police communications spokesman said the snow meant it was slow going on State Highway 8.
Snow had fallen to relatively low levels in parts of South Canterbury with hills surrounding Timaru receiving a coating.

New Plymouth: 16.5 degrees, sunny, light SW breeze. 28mm between 1am and around 5am. The rain came down quite heavily at times but the wind speed dropped down from around 70km/hr gusts to much less for the duration.

2013 has begun with a bang with flooding, seriously high winds, snow but also high temperatures, sunshine and sea breezes.
The first couple of days of the new year have been all over the show but after today it could settle down...well for two or three days at the most.
Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued by MetService for Taranaki in the wee hours of this morning which is the same system that delivered al the heavy rain in the south.Westport also had a similar warning last night.
Cantabrians saw a thunder and lightning display late yesterday and also last night over parts of the province with areas of heavy showers.
Snow has also fallen to low levels across the south last night and very early this morning.Weather analyst Richard Green says the Crown Range and Lindis Pass saw a coating. "It didn't stop there either as the top of the foothills in Canterbury also saw a dusting" he said.
Today there's a chance of isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms over the east of the Mainland once more.
"There's potential for more activity later today as a disturbance is not set yet to move away entirely" according to Mr Green.
Aucklanders have seen a contrast with the weather after recent summery conditions and warm days and evenings.Showers have moved across the city and the temperature has dropped a few degrees as well. A clearance is likely later today with tomorrow and the weekend looking mostly settled.
So today it's looking generally cooler in most places and a bit of everything is expected yet again...ahhhh a Kiwi summer.

West Melton
It is coolish here this morning from the snow that was delivered to the hills. We got three claps of thunder last night and that was it. Our rain total for the whole period was 6.6 in total - 4.4 prior to midnight and 2.2 after midnight. For what was predicted by Met Service and what we got was two totally different things. In fact if it were not for the 3 claps of thunder - you would not have noticed it.
I read what Jenny wrote regarfing Christchurch who evidentially got it but this is not the first time this has happened. Christchurch and West Melton seem to be in two different weather zones and the line seems to be at Kirk Road between the two areas.
It could have snowed very heavily here and none in Christchurch - the same with the rain - none here and pouring in town. Strange but true as has happened on too many occasions. I am not the only one that has noticed it either.
