Observation for 27th December 2012:
Another hot and stick day today, Humidex readings well into the 30’s for most of the day. Not so much rain today with 7.5mm and most of that was overnight. Just a few light and drizzly showers that took quite a while to develop on the Kaimai’s, looked as black as thunder then just dissipated to be like a see through sun shower but without the Sun! Attended Speedway at BayPark tonight and not a single drop of rain for the entire prelim or event, the track became more and more dusty as the night progressed which is a bit difficult to believe given the amount of rainfall we have had over the past days or. Not much more than 2 – 3 km down the road on the way home the roads were damp and I drove through a light shower.
Current Recordings at 23:56
Temp: 19.4c Steady, Humidity 83%, Rain: 7.5mm, Average Wind Speed (10 Mins) 3km/h E, Pressure 1020.4 hPa and Rising.

A very weak area of low pressure over the North Island today brings cloud and showers for most at some point meanwhile in the South Island higher pressure brings generally more settled conditions with morning drizzle or showers clearing about the upper South Island.
Upper North Island
Cloudy this morning with west to northwest breezes, the odd shower or drizzle patch. Conditions clearing up a little in the afternoon with some sun making an appearance. About southern Waikato, inland Bay Of Plenty and the ranges of East Cape showers become a bit more organised later in the afternoon and may be heavy. At night showers may push further north into other parts of the Waikato and coastal Bay Of Plenty however Auckland should remain dry. Dry in the morning about Gisborne with some sun and light winds, southerlies develop around midday with some increasing cloud, showers by evening.
HIGHS: 24-26, 27 in Gisborne
Lower North Island
Showers or drizzle patches clearing around midday becoming restricted to the east coast, a few sunny areas then developing in the west. Winds generally from the southeast a little brisk about Wellington at first then easing. Showers about the Central North Island, East Cape and perhaps inland Hawkes Bay and inland Taranaki becoming organised later in the afternoon possibly heavy then easing later in the evening and clearing from some areas at night.
HIGHS: 25-26 in the west, 17-18 in the east although perhaps getting into the low 20’s about Hawkes Bay
Upper South Island
Cloudy skies in the east with drizzle or showers about the Canterbury foothills clearing this morning, a few sunny areas possible this afternoon otherwise remaining mostly cloudy. Drizzle may even return for a time about coastal areas north of Banks Peninsula in the evening, light southeasterlies tend northeast later in the afternoon. About the Kaikoura area drizzle or showers may not clear till mid afternoon. Morning cloud breaks in Nelson with sunny areas increasing, light winds. On the West Coast north of Hokitika expect mostly sunny weather after any morning cloud clears, there is a chance of morning drizzle north of Buller. Winds tend northerly in the afternoon, a few isolated showers may develop late afternoon about inland ranges from Tasman southwards through to the Glaciers then clearing at night.
HIGHS: 22-24 on the West Coast. 21-22 for Nelson, 17-19 in Canterbury and Marlborough
Lower South Island
Mostly sunny weather with light winds. Some cloud develops along the Otago coastline from afternoon as northeasterlies freshen.
HIGHS: 17-19, mid 20’s in inland areas.

Another warm night across much of the North Island overnight with the thermometer failing to dip below 20 degrees in Tauranga, Whakatane and Gisborne. Aucklanders and those in Hamilton and much of Northland just dropped below 20 briefly.
It's been a different story in the deep south with Invercargill on a chilly five degrees and other parts of inland Otago and Southland a smidgen lower under mostly clear skies.
Cantabrians saw drizzly showers off and on yesterday and this morning cloudy conditions with the odd drizzle patch have remained. There's a chance of brighter conditions this afternoon and more decent sunshine and warmth during the following few days.
Temperatures should be in the low to mid twenties for much of the North Island today however southern parts should be in the high teens as cooler air clings on about Wellington, Levin, Paraparaumu, Otaki, Palmerston North and Masterton.
For many locals this will be a relief after recent heat through the Xmas period.
Mainlanders should see most of the warmth over inland and western areas with the mercury nudging up into the low to mid tenties but eastern and southern coastlines should remain mostly cool with cloudy areas. Temperatures are likely to reach the upper teens.
Tomorrow almost all of the country should climb into the 20s as a high moves in and a dry and brighter day is likely almost everywhere.
