Cloudy areas this morning in western areas of the North Island with northwesterlies, a few brief showers may move through around midday then sunny breaks develop. A few showers on and off for most of the day about Taranaki and Kapiti. Remaining dry in the Bay Of Plenty with light winds and longer sunny spells during the day. Cloudy about Northland with some rain about northeastern areas from afternoon clearing at night. Mostly fine on the east coast with light winds and mild temperatures.
Cloudy on the South Islands West Coast with northwesterlies and rain easing during the day, sunny areas and some cloud in Nelson with west to northwest breezes. Mostly fine and sunny in Marlborough through to Canterbury with light winds, morning high cloud clearing. Cloudy areas about Otago and Southland with southwesterly breezes, the odd shower develops around late morning.
Temperatures in the high teens or low 20 across most of the North Island today, perhaps reaching the mid 20’s on the east coast. A little cooler about Kapiti, Wellington and the Central North Island with mid teen temperatures. High teen temperatures on the east coast of the South Island north of Canterbury, 16 to 17 in Nelson. 13 to 14 degrees can be expected on the West Coast, Southland and about Otago.

Well the weather isn’t too exciting when I start to talk about high cloud but there you go. This area of high cloud is branching out from a weak low pressure system that will slide past north of the North Island during today, some rain has moved onto Northland this afternoon and should clear tonight.
Other parts of the North Island are generally dry although Kapiti through to Taranaki and parts of the Central North Island are getting the odd shower. Out east temperatures are warm with light winds, Hastings currently is on 19 degrees but high’s have reached 20 to 21 degrees in some eastern areas so far.
In the South Island the weather is warm out east north of Canterbury, also about Nelson. The lower half of the island is obscured by cloud and areas of showers. On the West Coast north of Hokitika there is a mix of cloudy areas and some sun, the odd shower passing through at times also. Christchurch has hit 20 degrees around midday but is sailing just under at present at 18.9.
The highest rainfall for the past 24 hours has been about our tallest peak, Mount Cook with 52.4mm.
