Morning showers ease across most of the North Island in the west however continue during the day in some areas becoming scattered, the odd sunny break too especially north of Auckland with brisk southwesterlies. In the evening another band of showers moves onto western areas, a few of these showers could be heavy especially about Taranaki through to the Kapiti Coast where thunderstorms are likely with hail.
On the east coast about Gisborne south through to the Wairarapa expect thick high cloud with light winds, the odd spot of rain possible at times any of which clear in the afternoon with sunnier weather developing with warm temperatures. Brief morning showers clear about Wellington with sunnier weather developing after cloud clears. Generally sunny in the afternoon with northwest breezes, later in the evening however there is the chance of a few showers spreading from the west and even the chance of a thunderstorm in those showers.
Showers for the West Coast of the South Island heavy and thundery at times with hail, northerlies change more west to southwest later in the afternoon with showers gradually easing. Showers for Southland spread into Otago around midday, a few of those showers may be heavy and thundery with some hail. Showers possibly heavy and thundery with hail move into Canterbury mid to late afternoon after a sunny start to the day, cold southwesterlies develop.
Sunny in Marlborough with northwesterly breezes and mild temperatures, in the evening showers possibly heavy and thundery may affect the outer sounds. Southwesterlies develop later at night in all areas with some cloud and a few showers mainly on the coast. Mostly sunny in Nelson with light winds, westerlies freshen in the evening with a few showers spreading from the west any of which clear at night.
16 to 17 degrees for most of the North Island today, temperatures of 18 and 19 on the east coast. 13 to 14 for the West Coast of the South Island, Southland and Otago. A 17 degree high in store for Canterbury before the southwest change, 18 to 19 for Marlborough. 17 for Nelson.

An unstable weather pattern has set up for today. Pieces of energy at the surface and favourable conditions aloft will make for a pretty wet Monday.
In addition to the showers and areas of rain, thunderstorms are a pretty good bet for many areas.
At this time, the best chance for thunderstorms looks to be about the West Coast, Nelson and the Kapiti Coast during the afternoon and evening. WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters and Government forecaster MetService agree that these regions are running a high risk for thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight.
Thunderstorms area also possible for eastern Otago and Canterbury, including Christchurch. Taranaki and Waitomo could also see thunderstorms. Although in these areas, the risk is slightly less. The timing on the thunderstorms for these regions would be this afternoon and tonight.
All thunderstorms that develop will have the potential to put down brief heavy rain, small hail and wind gusts up to 90 km/h.
