Sunny areas and some cloud over the North Island today with easterly winds, mostly cloudy north of the Waikato with showers at times in Northland spreading to Auckland and East Cape at night. Easterlies pick up during the day north of Auckland tending gusty southeast at night. About Taranaki through to Wellington along the west coast there may be a few showers during the day with south to southeasterly breezes.
Sunny areas and some cloud for the South Island with light winds, a few isolated afternoon showers possible inland for Canterbury, the Mackenzie Country and the for the ranges just inland along the West Coast from Greymouth to Fiordland. Some cloud will affect the Marlborough Sounds during the day with breezy southeasterly winds, a few showers about the outer sounds at times too particularly from evening.
16 to 17 degree highs for most of the North Island today however mid teen temperatures expected about Northland, Wellington and the Central North Island. 14 to 15 for most in the South Island today, 13 to 14 degrees in Southland.

As the low from up north moves south the whole of the North Island is covered in cloud, rain is falling in Northland with a few heavy areas of rain. The odd shower or drizzle patch elsewhere although dry north of Hawkes Bay in the east for now, the warmest temperature around New Zealand currently is in Hastings with 17.4 degrees despite high cloud.
Looking through various webcams on the takeabreak.co.nz website the sunrise this morning in Gisborne looked rather idyllic with no wind as can be seen by the calm water in the Port of Gisborne, not long after about 6.50am some breeze looks to have picked up however.
It isn’t too windy across the country at the moment although easterlies will start to pick up in Northland and will be strong there particularly in the east tonight.
The South Island is fairly settled today, there is a fair amount of cumulus clouds about though and the odd isolated shower in inland areas. Yesterday’s rain in South Canterbury and North Otago delivered upwards of 20 to 25mm of rain and while the area possibly doesn’t need too much moisture that amount won’t go amiss and will be good for some spring growth.
