Mostly sunny in the North Island today with light winds. On the west coast however expect cloudy areas with southwesterly breezes.
Mostly sunny over the South Island also with light winds, some cloud on the West Coast with westerlies and the chance of a light shower mainly in the morning. Expect drizzle in Fiordland with northwesterlies. Some cloud about Southland with westerlies, in the afternoon a southerly front moves in bringing showers which moves into Otago in the evening and into Canterbury overnight.
Snow flurries with the front will fall to 500m.
High’s once again today of around 16 to 17 degrees for the Waikato northwards, also the Bay Of Plenty and east coast. Mid teen high’s elsewhere. 13 to 14 for most in the South Island however a degree or two warmer about Nelson.

It’s quite a cloudy day across the North Island today, apart from on the east coast. Not that people living in those areas don’t already know that, but this is a round up of conditions and unfortunately with a big anticyclone there is not a lot to talk about, and nothing too specific affecting any area in particular. Perhaps some bland weather is sort of nice, we can get on with other things and not have to worry too much about what the weather is up to despite some cloud in the sky.
As long as it’s sunny and warm in the weekend I can take some cloud during the week, however the weather is often cunning with us all like that and turns on us when we don’t want it too.
No extremes today across most of the country, the most extreme thing that will happen is a front approaching Southland this afternoon bringing showers and snow flurries to 500m for a time this evening then clearing there overnight. Canterbury will get the front moving in overnight. The front itself isn’t that extreme really and Southland could do with some rain to wet the ground although a bit more would be appreciated then the sprinkle this will dish out.
The warmest place today so far is Gisborne on 17.4 degrees, the coldest is Kaikoura on 10 degrees with quite a keen southerly so no fishing in South Bay today although just over the Peninsula the wharf might be bearable.
UPDATE 2.40pm: As duley noted by our WeatherWatch facebook readers Tony Sharpe, Nicki Binding and Rachel Jennings the weather in many parts of Canterbury is rather nice at the present point in time to go a bit Fred Dagg on ya and I couldn't agree more.
