Mostly sunny with some cloud over the North Island today after a frosty start, light winds tending southwesterly especially in the west. A few light showers in the west also north of the Waikato coastline clear around midday. Showers about Wairarapa clear early this morning then about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne late afternoon or evening, cool southerlies.
Mostly fine and sunny over the South Island also after morning frosts with light winds tending northeasterly along the east coast and westerly on the West Coast and about Southland. Some cloud is likely in South Westland with a chance of drizzle in Fiordland at night.
Expect 16 to 17 degree high’s about the Bay of Plenty and north of Auckland, mid teen high’s elsewhere. About Wellington and along the east coast 12 to 13 degree’s is only likely however. 14 degrees on average can be expected for most in the South Island today, perhaps a degree or two warmer in Nelson and about the Wairau Valley. Southland and Central Otago will be cooler at 12 to 13 degrees however.

It’s a mostly settled day across the country, a few showers are clearing from Northland and Gisborne otherwise it’s a mix of sunny areas and some cloud for the North Island. The South Island is quite sunny also with some areas a little cool but others just making it into the pleasant catagory. In Christchurch we have around 12 to 13 degrees but down the road Ashburton it is a bit warmer on 14 degrees which can often happen when there is a northeasterly breeze.
Christchurch takes the hit first as the wind comes off the ocean then has a bit of land to travel across before getting to Ashburton. Some inland parts of Southland and South Canterbury look rather nice right now as does Nelson and parts of Marlborough.
The storm yesterday that hit Canterbury delivered up to 19mm of rain about Christchurch and 13.6mm for Darfield over a period of 2 to 3 hours. Rainfall rates peaked at about 9mm an hour.
The warmest temperature today so far is coming out of Northland with Whangarei sitting on 17 degrees. The windiest place is Invercargill with westerlies at 31 km/h.
