A mix of sunny areas and some cloud today over the North Island, gusty west to southwest winds lighter in inland areas. There will be a few showers about, particularly in western areas this morning. On the east coast skies will be sunny with light winds freshening from the northwest in the afternoon at times, a period of west to southwest winds develop late afternoon or evening with the risk of a shower or two. Late evening in Wellington southerlies develop with a few showers.
Sunny areas and some cloud on the West Coast of the South Island with light westerlies, showers move through Fiordland in the morning reaching the likes of Greymouth late afternoon then clearing at night with a risk of frosts in sheltered areas. Sunny in Nelson and Marlborough after any morning rain clears, light winds although the outer sounds will experience breezy west to northwest winds. Southwesterlies develop in Marlborough in the evening with a few showers mainly on the coast, frosty later at night in Marlborough in sheltered areas.
Mostly fine and sunny in Canterbury with light winds, a southwest change in the afternoon brings a period of showers possibly heavy and thundery with a risk of hail then clearing in the evening. Those showers may bring a period of snow to 500m in the evening however quickly clearing. Risk of frosts later at night especially in inland sheltered areas.
A southwest change develops in Southland mid morning then moving into Otago by midday bringing a period of showers possibly heavy in northern parts of coastal Otago. It will be mostly sunny with light winds beforehand, any showers clear by evening and frosts develop at night in sheltered areas especially inland. There will be a period of snow showers to 400m for a time with the southwest change however only briefly then clearing.
16 to 17 degrees about Bay of Plenty and Auckland northwards, mid teen high’s elsewhere however early 20 degree high’s likely on the east coast. High teen temperatures for Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury today. 14 on average for the West Coast and about coastal Otago, 11 to 12 in Central Otago and Southland.

After the deluge this morning in Wellington we’ve had showers over much of the North Island apart from most far eastern areas, the showers are petering out this afternoon being replaced by longer sunny spells. Winds are a bit breezy in the west however but will ease tonight.
In the South Island morning rain cleared Nelson and Marlborough (it was the same system of rain that caused the issues in Wellington) then sunny weather developed. A front is working it’s way north which hit Southland mid morning and is now moving through Otago and about to get into South Canterbury.
There have been a few lightning strikes detected from this front which is moving north so storms may come to fruition in Canterbury mid to late afternoon as it passes through, Christchurch could miss out however with the storms more likely at this stage to track inland but it would always be worth keeping an eye out. That’s not to say Christchurch may not see some heavy showers move through with the southwest change.
The warmest temperature at present goes to the east coast of the North Island in Napier which is on 21.1 degrees, Hastings not far behind on 20.4. The windiest town is New Plymouth with 46 km/h winds from the west, Auckland is quite windy too with westerlies at 35 km/h gusting to 46 km/h.
