Tokoroa - 8am

Overnight low of 10.1ºC and has hardly changed.  Steady rain from 10pm onwards and now 17.6mm of rain since midnight. The northerly wind has died to nothing.  We may be seeing the last of the rain but it should just drizzle for a while yet.

Title: Sunday's national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on September 16, 2012, 02:13:42 PM
Low pressure over the Tasman Sea will bring another day of unsettled weather to the country.

Morning rain about the North Island will begin to clear from Auckland and Northland a little later this morning.  However, it is expected to hang out over the Bay of Plenty and could become heavy at times.  For this reason, Government forecaster MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Warning for the eastern Bay of Plenty.  Rainfall intensities could reach 25 mm/hr about the ranges.

Showers will persist about East Cape/Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, but rainfall totals aren’t expected to warrant the issuance of a warning.  Nevertheless, MetService says the situation will be monitored.

Showers will return to Northland and Auckland late this afternoon.  Showers will also likely return to the Waikato.

Showers are also expected to return to the upper South Island this afternoon.  Some brief heavy rain is possible about Nelson this evening.

Winds will also pick up tonight across the western North Island as the centre of the low approaches.  Westerly winds will swing around to the north and become gusty after sunset.

Title: Thunderstorm and heavy rain threat
Post by: OhauitiWeather on September 16, 2012, 03:13:16 PM
Heavy rain remains a threat for a few areas around New Zealand today.

The first area is the eastern Bay of Plenty.  A stubborn high off to our east is tying up the Tasman low as it tries to move across the country.  That will keep the eastern part of the North Island in an extended period of rain today and some of it could be heavy.  A thunderstorm or two can’t be ruled out either.

Rainfall rates could approach 25mm/hr about the ranges.  Government forecaster MetService has a Heavy Rain Warning in place.

Another area that could see heavy rain is north-western Nelson.  Additional heavy rain is possible this afternoon and this evening, along with the chance for a few thunderstorms.

The western part of the North Island could also see brief heavy rain this afternoon and this evening.  The best chance for heavy rain would be during any thunderstorms that may develop.
