Current Weather report for 24/08/12 from Ohauiti Weather

Observation:
Blue sky and warm sun this morning after an overnight thunderstorm, we only got the edge of it but it still delivered 7.9mm of precipitation overnight and a reasonable temperature drop.  Light NW airs today with some reasonably innocuous clouds standing off the Kaimai Ranges to the west however there are some CB’s in the distance.  Warning up now after the Thunderstorm’s cooling but not quite ready to shed the jumper just yet.

Title: Friday’s national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on August 24, 2012, 09:50:49 PM
Sunny over the North Island today after morning fog patches burn off, light winds tend easterly or northeasterly along eastern coastlines. A few puffy clouds in the afternoon with a chance of an isolated showers anywhere from the Central North Island through to Auckland. Northerlies a little breezy about Wellington late in the day with some cloud.

Mostly sunny in the South Island. Winds will be light in the east tending north to northeasterly, expect a little high cloud at times also from Canterbury southwards. In inland areas east of the main divide northwesterly winds will freshen during the afternoon bringing mild temperatures. Cloud spreading north along the West Coast during the day with drizzle patches in Fiordland turning to showers in the evening, expect north to northeasterly winds.

16 to 17 degree high’s north of the Waikato, mid teen high’s elsewhere in the North Island although a degree or two cooler for southern areas of the Central North Island. Mid teen high’s for most from Southland right up to Nelson along the east coast today in the South Island, in the afternoon temperatures could get upwards of 16 to 17 degrees in inland areas of Canterbury. 14 degree high’s along the West Coast.

Title: Beaut day across New Zealand
Post by: OhauitiWeather on August 24, 2012, 09:53:48 PM
This is how it is meant to be, we’ve had the rain, plenty of it. So now the weather gods have graced us with a spell of settled weather to release the stress and it’s all happening at the end of the week which makes it feel that much better.

There is a few showers peppering the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and about the east coast of Northland however and there may be a run of isolated afternoon heat showers in the same spots as they happened yesterday. Of course these showers today do have a summery quality to them so it may not seem all that bad if you are in those areas.

The West Coast of the South Island is a little cloudy and there is some drizzle about South Westland, high cloud is stretching across Southland and Otago also. Temperatures around the country are mostly sticking in the mid teens at present with higher figures in isolated pockets about the place, some with slighter lower temperatures too notably Wellington, some Central North Island areas and on the West Coast in the South Island.

Out of interest the highest rainfall figure I could find for the storm that moved into the Bay Of Plenty yesterday evening was 18.5mm an hour near Awakapong at 7pm, now that’s getting reasonably heavy. In contrast the heavy rain the affected parts of Christchurch in the middle of this month, the rainfall rates were no more then 6 to 7mm an hour however it lasted over a much longer period of time is the difference.
