Title: Thursday’s national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on August 16, 2012, 09:15:02 PM
Sunny areas and some cloud in Northland with westerly breezes, odd shower at times. Sunny areas to start in the Bay of Plenty with westerlies, showers develop around midday in the west spreading east through the bay during the afternoon. About Auckland through to Taranaki expect cloudy areas with a few showers at times and westerlies, chance of some sunny spells too. Showers about Auckland and Waikato could be a bit heavier in the afternoon with a period of stronger southwesterly winds then easing in the evening.

Cloudy in the Manawatu, Kapiti, Wellington and Wairarapa with rain in the morning easing to showers as northerlies tend more westerly during the day. Mostly sunny in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay after morning rain clears, light winds.

Cloudy areas about Mid and South Canterbury, sunny breaks in Otago and Southland, light winds tending northeast along the coast. Showers about Nelson clear in the morning with sunny breaks then developing. Showers from Marlborough through to North Canterbury, showers may be heavy at times about Marlborough and the Kaikoura Coast. Showers look like clearing from around Christchurch in the afternoon although there is a chance they may linger around till evening especially on Banks Peninsula, southwesterly breezes.

On the West Coast expect showers in the morning becoming more confined to Buller and Fiordland in the afternoon, west to southwesterly breezes.

15 to 16 degrees for most in the North Island tomorrow although a little cooler in the Central North Island, high’s could top 17 or even 18 in the afternoon in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay however. Temperatures ranging from 12 to 14 degrees in the South Island.

Title: Heaviest falls currently moving through parts of central North Island
Post by: OhauitiWeather on August 16, 2012, 09:22:28 PM
There is an area of isolated heavy showers currently moving through Taranaki and Waikato, this area of heavy showers is also now moving into the Bay of Plenty. This is the heaviest rain around in the country at present although technically speaking it falls into the moderate rainfall bracket. Near Waihi the rainfall rate hit 3.5mm per hour recently and in Te Kuiti 3.0mm was recorded in the last hour.

The highest rainfall for the past 24 hours through till 1pm today was in the ranges behind Motueka at 37.5mm then not far behind in Taranaki at Okato recording 36.4mm.

Some parts around New Zealand are seeing sun, particularly in Westland in the South Island and after all the rain recently Otago and South Canterbury will be welcoming the sun today. Also the east coast north of Hawkes Bay in the North Island.

The warmest spots go to Kerikeri and Gisborne currently floating around 16 to 17 degrees.
