Some cloud here in Bishopdale abit of sun now,
Air temp=7.9c.
Wind from the Northeast.
Summary of weather sofar for August.
Very warm night Temps up 2c on avg.
Very cool day Temps down 1c on norm.
But when you use my Avg Sun &Air Temp avg for August its -1.1c on normal over all.
Sunshine well down only 23hours this month sofar.
Rainfall already 50% of norm in Bishopdale.

As with many above it has been a lovely day here on the east coast.
Need a week of this though to dry out the surface slush. Well thats what it sound like when you walk on our grass slush slush slush.
Since I cant mow the lawns I have put weed killer down instead today :)

The strengthening Tasman low is beginning to spread showers across the upper tip of the North Island early this morning.  The rest of the country should see a settled morning.  Although it will be quite foggy about parts of the North Island.  Hamilton residents can expect a morning much like yesterday.  If you plan on being out on the roads about the Waikato this morning, allow yourself some extra time to get to where you are going.

This afternoon, showers will begin to move into Auckland.  Late this afternoon, showers should move into Waikato and western Bay of Plenty.

Wellington is likely to remain settled for much of the day.  The South Island should also remain settled with the exception of Nelson and Invercargill.  But even there, the precipitation should hold off until after sunset.

Heavy rain is still a possibility with this incoming low.  The greatest threat for heavy rain today will be about Northland late this morning through tonight.  Government forecaster MetService has heavy rain warnings in effect.

With the exception of the far southeast, heavy rain is also possible for the rest of the North Island.  Also, the upper regions of the South Island.  However, these areas are likely to not see heavy rain until after sunset tonight.

Title: Rain is on the way

Here in the Waikato you would never believe we have big low churning out over the Tasman.  The fog burned off early this morning and now we have bright sunshine in Te Awamutu and Hamilton.  Even Auckland is seeing some blue sky and sunshine this morning.

But the rain is on its way.

In fact, Northland has already seen rain this morning.  It won’t be much longer before Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula see precipitation falling from the sky as well.

None of this stuff is particularly heavy at this point, there is a very real possibility for heavy rain later today and tomorrow.  Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne are all likely to see some heavy rain later today and into tomorrow morning.  Some thundery falls are even possible about Northland later today.  Thunderstorms are also possible about the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne tonight.

The South Island could also see some heavy rainfall.  Mainlanders in south Canterbury and eastern Otago could see as much as 100mm between tomorrow afternoon and Monday night.  Many thanks to Government forecaster MetService for that rainfall estimate.


Here are the latest Heavy Rain Warnings:

The hill country in the northeast of Northland north of Whangarei-
50-70mm of rain may accumulate starting this afternoon and ending late tonight.  Peak rainfall rates of 15-25mm/hr are possible with the heaviest amounts in thunderstorms.

*  Coromandel Peninsula-
Periods of heavy rain should begin tonight and last through the overnight hours.  70-90mm or rain may accumulate with peak rates of 15-25 mm/hr possible.  Again, the heaviest rates are likely to occur in thunderstorms.

*  Bay of Plenty and far northern Gisborne-
Rain is expected to set in about western Bay of Plenty later this evening and spread east overnight.  From midnight tonight to noon Sunday, 70-90mm may accumulate with peak rates of 15-25mm/hr.  The heaviest rates are expected to be associated with thunderstorms.

*  Canterbury-
Easterly rain is expected to set in Sunday morning and become heavy at times by afternoon, especially inland. From noon Sunday to 6pm Monday, expect 80-100 mm in north Canterbury, 110-130mm in south Canterbury and 40-60mm near the coast. General rainfall rates of 2 to 3 mm/hr are likely with occasional peak rates of 5-10mm/hr.

*  Hills and ranges of east Otago-
Rain is expected to set in Sunday afternoon and become heavy at times. From 3pm Sunday to midnight Monday, 110-130 mm may accumulate about the ranges and 50-60mm near the coast. Rainfall rates generally 2-3mm/hr with occasional peak rates of 5-10mm/hr. Further rain is possible Tuesday morning.

A large low in the Tasman Sea poses a firm risk for more slips and flooding in regions that have already been swamped by heavy rains in recent weeks.

The heaviest rain may linger for two or three days for some places, while others may see sunshine mixed with the odd heavy shower - both set ups capable of producing more problems.

WeatherWatch Head Analyst Philip Duncan said "In the north it will be heaviest overnight tonight and on Sunday morning, then from Sunday afternoon until possibly Wednesday eastern areas of the South Island look likely to be hammered by relentless rain".

Mr Duncan said yesterday that Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Canterbury don't need more rain - yet those are the exact regions being targeted by this incoming low.

Already rain is falling about the upper parts of the North Island.  Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula are all seeing some precipitation late this afternoon.

WeatherWatch Facebook readers said that the day may have started off settled about Auckland, it has already begun to turn grey, windy and rainy.

Juliette Banks of Birkdale said that she felt a temperature drop around 2:30 this afternoon and it was cloudy and windy and looking like it could bucket down.  All of that after what she said was a lovely morning.

Mr Duncan says the sub-tropical nature makes the rain clouds more "explosive" which can lead to torrential downpours which cause flash flooding and slips.

Mr Duncan adds "This low is a big one - bigger doesn't always mean more aggressive but the bigger they are the more reach they have, pulling in cold air for Sydney, where snow has fallen inland, and for New Zealand on the other side it's the opposite, pulling down warm sub-tropical air from near New Caledonia and producing some heavy bands of rain".

WeatherWatch Analyst Howard Joseph says the centre of the low is currently about midway between Australia and New Zealand, but a frontal boundary attached to the low is being driven south across the country.  Joseph says “That’s the focus for the showers, heavy rain and possible thunderstorms.  As that continues to slide south tonight, so will the threat for heavy and thundery falls.”

Mr Joseph says there is a high risk for flooding and slips in Canterbury and a moderate to high risk for more localised slips and flooding across Waikato, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne - although the rain bands here may be heavier, they should be faster moving.

Auckland, Northland, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough and Otago may also receive rain heavy enough to cause more minor flooding - and potentially slightly more serious flooding if the system slows down or targets these areas a little more.

Mr Joseph adds "For the upper North Island there's about 12 hours of rain on the way, with some torrential falls over a 3 to 6 hour period tonight or Sunday morning.  For places like Canterbury the rain may linger for two or three days as the low stalls off the east coast".
