Title: Wednesday’s national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on July 18, 2012, 08:15:17 PM
A shorter forecast generally means more settled weather and that is the case today.

Mostly clear and sunny across the North Island today with light winds, morning frosts in inland areas. Some cloud at times during the day along western coastlines. Temperatures in the mid teens for most areas, low teens for the Central North Island and about Wellington however.

Sunny with light winds in Nelson, also on the east coast of the South Island where winds will tend northeasterly, more northwesterly inland. A little high cloud about Otago. Northwesterly breezes in Southland with a little cloud at times, perhaps a shower later in the day. Cloudy areas on the West Coast with showers at times south of about Hokitika, expect west to northwesterly winds.

Mid teen high’s for most in Nelson and along the east coast, 12 or 13 can be expected along the West Coast and in Central Otago.

Title: Dunedin hits 18 degrees
Post by: OhauitiWeather on July 18, 2012, 08:32:25 PM
This would have to be the warmest part of the country today, I’m also seeing a few unofficial 19 and even 20 degree temperatures about the city. No doubt of course due to the foehn northwesterly airflow currently over the region.

The North Island is experiencing mostly sunny weather today although there is some cloud on western coastlines particularly around northern Taranaki. The coldest temperatures overnight look to of been around –2 in the Central North Island and parts of the Waikato, afternoon temperatures ranging between 13 and 16 for most although low double figure high’s currently in the Central North Island.

The South Island is looking good for most although there is a fair amount of high cloud about Canterbury and Otago, winds are light. Nelson and Marlborough is experiencing sunny weather however. Cloudy on the West Coast especially south of Westport with showers generally south of about Hokitika although I can see a few have sneaked north just past there. Southland is dry with areas of high cloud and northwesterly breezes.

Temperatures look to be in the mid teens for most this afternoon in the South Island although a tad lower in Central Otago and along the West Coast. The combination of high cloud not letting the sun in and a northeast breeze is making it a little cooler in Christchurch about now although it did reach 15 degrees around 1pm. The stand out of course being Dunedin where those warm northwest winds are making things quite pleasant down there.
