Quite overcast in Waitakere, but we've just been treated to a pretty decent sunrise.  Temperature is currently falling, its 7.2°C at the moment and may get back to the previously recorded low of 7.1°C
For the while it's nice and calm, dry as well - not fully expecting this situation to remain so may well make a valiant attempt to mow the lawn.

Title: Front moves in, warm out east.
Post by: JennyLeez on July 14, 2012, 11:26:07 AM
The forecast front is now moving slowly up the West Coast of the South Island delivering rain, heavy in areas. The rest of the South Island is cloudy, mainly thick high cloud although in Otago cloud will be a little lower as light showers look to be moving into the region. Southland looks to be dry for now however there may be a few showers later.
Christchurch had a little bit of rain this morning spilling over from the alps, typically we don’t get rain in northwesterly airflows over Christchurch but occasionally if systems are strong enough a bit of rain can come out of high cloud as it passes over. Temperatures are sitting around 12 or 13 degrees in most places but north of Timaru along the east coast it’s looking a bit warmer, temperatures now up in the mid teens, even a few 16 and 17 degree readings out there at the moment. Right on the Christchurch coastline temperatures are around 14 degrees but could pop up a little more if the northwesterly airflow arrives.
The North Island’s east coast has really got it made, warm temperatures and sunny skies although a little high cloud is getting into Wairarapa now. Temperatures are averaging 17 degrees at the moment so that makes a welcome change from when a week back it was claggy cloud and showers for what seemed a very long time.
Northland down through to Auckland and even parts of the Waikato are sunning up this afternoon, high’s in the mid teens. Cloudy areas still across other areas of the North Island with readings around 12 or 13 degrees, a few showers about Taranaki at the moment aswell and north to northwesterly winds are strong to gale force about Cook Strait at the moment.

Unoffical Report of 250mm  rain in Runanga, Greymouth last 2 days.

It's not been a bad day today with a High of 14.7 and sunny enough for my bee's to get out and about. Mowed the lawns and spread some fert on the paddocks, hopefully rain tonight to wash it in.

Title: Outlook for Saturday, Taranaki still in for heavy rain Sunday
Post by: OhauitiWeather on July 15, 2012, 12:26:13 AM
The start to the weekend in the South Island isn’t looking to good unless you live on the east coast in Marlborough.

Expect heavy rain on the West Coast north of the Glaciers with breezy north to northesterly winds, rain won’t be as intense further south and winds will be lighter. Cloudy about Southland and Otago with rain or showers, winds will be variable at times however mainly coming in from the northerly quarter. A few showers or rain patches about Canterbury with light southwesterlies tending northerly later in the day.

On the east coast in Marlborough winds will be gusty from the northwest with high cloud and temperatures will be mild in the afternoon. It should remain dry mostly on the coast itself although watch for a rouge shower spreading off the ranges at times, further inland showers will be spreading over from the west. Nelson can expect rain to develop during the morning with increasing northerlies, heavy rain at night in the northwest Nelson ranges.

Mild weather on the east coast of the North Island tomorrow with light winds freshening from the northwest at times, also some high cloud. Northwesterlies will be gusty about Wairarapa however. Cloudy in the west from Wellington up through to Taranaki with increasing north to northwesterly winds, showers at times becoming more widespread by evening. Cloud building in all other areas with increasing northerlies, a few sunny periods still possible though. There is the chance of a light shower later in the day from the Waikato northwards.

Strong to gale force northwesterlies are likely about Cook Strait also tomorrow.

Taranaki is still looking likely to get heavy rain on Sunday then easing midday Monday as a westerly change develops, mainly in northern areas of the district. Totals of 200 to 250mm are possible about Mount Taranaki. Winds will also be strong, gale force northerly winds are likely especially in the later half of Sunday and early Monday on the coast.

Title: Saturday's national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on July 15, 2012, 12:36:27 AM
Heavy rain will continue across the western and northwestern regions of the South Island today. The best chances for heavy rain will move from Westland this morning into Nelson and northwest Marlborough for this afternoon and this evening. Heavy rain could also affect Taranaki tonight.

Winds will be a factor as well. Gusty north to northwest winds are expected for these areas.

Strong winds may also be a factor. Inalnd parts of Marlborough could see winds approaching severe gale levels. Wellington and southern Wairarapa could also see severe gales. Government forecaster MetService has a severe weather watch in effect for these areas. Whilst Wellington and southern Wairarapa could see a few showers this morning and this afternoon, widespread rain will likely hold off until tonight. Heavy rainfall should not be a factor until the overnight hours.

For the rest of the South Island, a few showers will be possible along the eastern and southern regions. Don't expect an all day rain. At the same time, don't look for too much sun either.

For the rest of the North Island, a few showers are possible for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne during the daylight hours. Otherwise, look for a mainly cloudy sky with precipitation becoming more widespread tonight.
