Almost 12,000 lightning strikes have been recorded over the North Island today.

That figure is a bit misleading though as it is the combined total of the 3 or 4 privately owned boltek detectors using the Nexstorm software that are networked together. A lot of strikes in that total would have been repeat countings of the same strike.
My detector recorded just under 2561 flashes with 6397 strokes.
Someone from Metservice commented on another forum that the metservice network picked up around 4700 strikes through the day.
