Title: Showers skirt the nation's coastlines
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 29, 2012, 12:54:29 AM
The skies continue to dry out this evening following a rough 72 hours of squalls, hail and heavy downpours.  As we head into Thursday evening the wind flow across the country is mostly south west - the same angle that much of the nation's shore lines point, which means a lot of the shower activity is now running up the coastlines but for big sections of the country they are well offshore.

With the lower South Island considerably wider than the middle section, it means most showers are missing Canterbury, as the lower South Island shelters areas further north - although Banks Peninsula is getting hit by strong southerlies and showers, with snow expected above 400m.

Showers are also coming into parts of Southland and coastal Otago.

Showers are affecting Wairarapa's coastline but mostly missing Hawkes Bay.

On the West Coast much lighter showers are moving in around Greymouth while mostly light showers are moving into western areas of the North Island, mostly Taranaki, Auckland, Waikato and Northland.

Tomorrow the showers will continue to get smaller, more isolated and few and far between.

Dry weather should be in place for over 95% of the country by the weekend,.

Wind has dropped off to nothing, first time in days here in Waitakere that the anemometer has stopped spinning (albeit slowly).  Attached graph - windy isn't it...  :D
Temperature dropping quite fast still, 6.7°C now - definitely on track for a cold night here.
Title: Friday's national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 29, 2012, 07:44:48 PM
High pressure will build in off the Tasman Sea today, bring settled weather to the country.

The only chances for rain today will be about Dunedin, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.  But even in these areas, precipitation chances are small.  These areas, along with the rest of the eastern parts of the country, will likely still see some rather windy conditions...at least for the early part of the day.

The rest of the country is looking at some settled, if not rather chilly weather.  Inland Southland and Otago could end up going below zero tonight after not making it much above 5 for daytime highs.

Highs about the rest of the country should be between 10 and 15.

Title: Strong winds finally ease today...for most (+Maps)
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 29, 2012, 07:49:28 PM
Not everyone has had snow, not everyone has had heavy rain but most regions have had strong, cold, winds this week as a nasty winter cyclone pushed past the South Island.

The storm, which rapidly developed on Monday night, was fairly small in size then - but over the past three days it has grown considerably, although the centre has weakened somewhat.

On Thursday evening the severe gales continued to hug the very south east and extreme east of the South Island - mostly Dunedin, Coastal Otago, the Catlins and Banks Peninsula.

WeatherWatch.co.nz readers said the gales - which lasted well over 24 hours in some places - felt "strong enough to lift the roof".

However as the winds ease in Coastal Otago they will continue further north along the east of the North Island as the large low continues to slowly push them northwards.

Strong south to south west winds will clip exposed areas from Wellngton and Wairarapa to parts of Hawkes Bay, Mahia Peninsula and exposed parts of Gisborne - however at lesser speeds than what Dunedin experienced as the low very slowly weakens.

By Friday night winds will ease nationwide with gusty conditions limited only to the far east of the North Island.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/sites/all/files/Wind1(1).jpg)
Thursday Afternoon - the purple indicates the belt of solid gale force winds just nicking the south east and far east of the South Island.  The rest of country had strong/gusty winds indicated by orange and red.

Noon Friday and the blue colours indicate light winds, so a much calmer afternoon expected for Southland and Coastal Otago - but then the large low pushes strong winds into the eastern side of the North Island - however at a weaker level than what Dunedin faced yesterday.

Title: Huge waves close road near Wellington airport
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 29, 2012, 07:53:20 PM
Large swells from Cook Strait closed Moa Point Road earlier this morning, at the southern end of Wellington Airport.

Wellington City Council said the waves had brought boulders, rocks and other debris on to the road.

Huge seas generated by the same storm that has affected New Zealand all week are responsible for the big waves hitting the North Island's south coast today.

Offshore swells are 6 to 8 metres high.  The same same swells hit the western coastline at the start of the week, and at the time WeatherWatch.co.nz said the area of huge swells was the largest on the planet.

The council advised motorists to avoid south coast roads especially in the Owhiro Bay and Island Bay areas where kelp, rocks and other debris had been washed up and was making driving conditions hazardous.

Title: Heavy frosts tonight
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 29, 2012, 08:19:17 PM
An anticyclone will move over the country tonight paving the way for sunny
clear skies tomorrow in most places however there is one last sting in the
tail of the departing southwesterly airflow and that is the potential for
heavy frosts to develop tonight and tomorrow morning especially in inland
areas around the country with Central Otago looking to be hit the heaviest.
WeatherWatch.co.nz analyst Aaron Wilkinson says:

"Central Otago could expect lows of around –8 degrees tonight so black ice
will be an issue on the roads in the morning, ice on the roads could still
cause issues for most of the day in areas sheltered from the sun.”

Further severe frosts are likely on Sunday and Monday mornings aswell
however by Tuesday morning an approaching depression from the Tasman Sea
will bring a northerly airlfow over the South Island with higher overnight
temperatures.
