Title: Monday's national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 25, 2012, 02:59:02 PM
Ok so the weekend is over and done with and the last full week  of June has got underway and what a way for it to begin.

Western Coasts and central and upper parts of the North Island are set for a fairly eventful 24 hours.
It might start off a little lame but as the day continues to unfold and as night approaches rain is likely to settle in and exposed areas could see very blustery conditions with some heavy downpours and isolated thunderstorms tonight,  overnight ot tomorrow.

Eastern areas of the nation should largely duck the incoming belt of severe weather but still some showers could come and go from time to time however coastal Canterbury should remain mostly dry.

Westerly winds are expected to get quite wild later today or tonight over western and southern parts with potential for peak gusts to cause possible problems on the roads for towing and high sided vehicles.

We'll be updating the story a little later this morning.

Title: Auckland rattled by brief thunder and rain display
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 25, 2012, 03:03:52 PM
It was a bit of a brief and violent outburst for some in Auckland this morning as rain, hail, lightning and thunder swept parts of the city.

Not all of the city copped the show but a majority did and some of our Facebook readers were quick to comment when we put the word out."Just had a thunder-induced near heart attack here, lol... gave me such a fright!! Amazing weather" said Erin.

Marlena mentioned "Crazy weather and right at school drop off time. Made me glad my wee one is still a baby. Back garden now resembles a marsh and the driveway a small waterfall".

The rain tumbled down in some areas and Dane had the rainfall guage out "‎10 mm of rain in 10 mins. Was heavy but just light rain now".

Others also mentioned the thunder and lightning display"Heavy heavy rain and amazingly loud thunder as we were walking into school in Massey Auckland!" according to Kirsty and Nicola added "Thunder, lightning & hail just as my boy about to go to the gate to catch the bus this morning at Te Kohanga".

We believed that the area of showers approaching the city would break up as it often does but this time it gathered momentum and packed a bit of a punch. The thunder caught us on the hop!

The rest of the day doesn't appear quite so eventful but thanks for all your comments into WeatherWatch.co.nz

temp hovered round 5°C for most of the day before dropping to 4°C with the snow. but once the snow cleared, the sun came out briefly, and we climbed to 8.8°C, but we've now dropped to 6.6°C
