Reasonably clear in Waitakere this morning, still very damp from yesterday's rain (7 mm altogether).  Temperature is currently 11.1°C from a low of 10°C - still a fair chance of some rain today and my forecast high is looking to around 15°C

Winter Solstice today.

just checked, times for solstice were given in UTC, so my comment above is wrong, the solstice is tomorrow

I thought the shortest day was the 21st?
probably debatable

The winter solstice just squeaks in to being today, time it occurs is at 23.09 - but tomorrow, June 21st is the shortest day by one second (according to the site I just looked at)

correction to above just noticed that the time the solstice was given at was actually in UTC, so that does make it 11.09 am tomorrow after all

Rain falling in Waitakere now, started just after 7 am - just a shower most likely, did get up to 6.2 mm/hr rate.
There's some light drizzly stuff in Auckland CBD at the moment too.

Title: Wednesday's national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 20, 2012, 01:58:50 PM
Another weather system will make its way toward New Zealand today.  The Tasmanian low will bring more wind and rain to the North Island as we head into the afternoon and evening hours.  That’s on top of the showers that will be dotting the island this morning.

There will be enough energy with this system that thunderstorms are a possibility for the western coastal sections of the North Island, including Auckland.  The best chance for that will be this afternoon and tonight.

The upper regions of the South Island will also see a bit of an unsettled day.  Showers are possible all day and into tonight for Nelson and Marlborough.  The West Coast could see showers early today.  Canterbury could see a few showers late today and this evening.

It should be a dry day for most of the deep south.  Invercargill could end up with a bit of shower activity today.  But the rest of Southland and Otago should be dry.

Title: Thunderstorms could rumble parts of NI this afternoon and tonight
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 20, 2012, 02:00:37 PM
A new low moving in off the Tasman Sea will bring more wind and rain to the North Island this afternoon and tonight.

Some of that rain may fall from thunderstorms.  Some heavy falls are also possible.

The best chance for thunderstorms looks to be this afternoon and this evening from Auckland and Northland.

Other areas at significant risk for thunderstorms include Taranaki, western Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne/East Cape.  However, these areas are more likely to see thunderstorms after sunset.  The chances would then last into tonight.

Rainfall rates up to 15mm per hour and winds gusting up to 110 km/h are possible.

Small tornadoes are also possible.  However, the risk is small (less than 20%).

Thunderstorms and lightning are being caught on my mates Boltek Lightning Radar system here in Tokoroa. (Jim Craig - member here too) it lines up with the rain radar images as well.

Also on this static image of his screen, too big to display on here:

and MetSevice Rain Radar ...

Probably quite heavy rainfalls coming for some areas north of Tokoroa

Tokoroa - 3:15pm

Overcast and dull after bright periods from 10am through to 2pm.  However, have also had 3.1mm of rain - off and on...
The winds are light 5-20km/hr Nor-Westers - variable though in direction. The barometer has risen a little and then flattened at 1008.4 hPa. Mild at 14deg for a high at 1pm and dropped now to 11.6ºC.  More rain to come and some likely to be heavy - after 6pm here tonight.

excellent idea Tom, we could restock your wine cellar and fill the cupboards with expensive chocolate for Jenny, Derek is such a generous soul I am sure he has enough credit for all of that.  Anything else you need Tom, new car, more rooms?
