Patchy cloud this morning with light misty fog in the valley at Waitakere, occasional very distant lightning flashes over to our east between 4 am and 6 am.  Still very damp outside (11.8 mm of rain yesterday), temperature low of 8.4°C and up to 10.7°C - some light rain falling now too, 0.4 mm started just after 7 am

Dull and damp here in Tokoroa, started raining again about 2:30am.  Min was 8.8ºC and now 9.0ºC.  Mild.  A light northerly breeze.  The wet of winter has arrived...

Port Robinson 8.15am

Partly cloudy with a west to nor west wind around 5kmh. Temperature 9.8° dropping from a high of 11.4° an hour ago. Southerly change due later this morning with train and showers. 0.8mm of rain recorded since midnight.

Damp, dank and dreary, no wind and showers every now and then.  One good thing about this wintry weather it keeps me inside knitting instead of being outside heaving bags of compost all over the gardens most of which are snuggled under a blanket of pea straw.

Christchurch blanketed in fog as far north as Amberley. Fine weather from there to Cheviot. The odd fog patch around Port Robinson and Gore Bay probably stretching up the Kaikoura coast.
Temperature now 7.8° at Port Robinson, with the wind round to the SE gusting to a max of 16kmh.

It's looking fairly changeable once again across the country today as unstable air remains above us.

Showers and thunderstorms could buffet western parts of the country and a few northern areas as well including Auckland and Wellington.

Some of the cloud build ups are looking impressive on the satellite map this morning.

Not all areas will be on the receiving end of these squally outbreaks as eastern areas will be mostly dry with just the odd spillover shower likely. Marlborough looks to be the soggiest eastern region at this point.

Temperatures are likelyto be slightly above average in the north today even with the inclement weather and although southern districts were supposed to warm up yesterday, many in the east and south didn't notice much of a rise in temperature.

Best place seems to be out east and possibly Christchurch.

Wettest is looking anywhere exposed to the west.

Thunderstorms have been a feature overnight and continue to remain a risk today and tomorrow as a disturbed northwest flow covers the top half of the country.

Reports of thunder and lightning came in from parts of Northland,central North Island areas and Taranaki last night with a couple of power outages occurring in mainly remote areas.

Today thunderstorms could rattle again as another cluster seems to be building to the west however at times they have a tendency to break up over parts of Auckland but they can maintain their impetus over exposed areas such as Taranaki and Northland, which effectively took place last night.

Our lightning tracker has been fairly active over the last few hours with some strikes taking place in unexpected areas such as just off Banks Peninsula earlier this morning.

Temperatures are likely to remain mild over the upper north despites boisterous weather conditions at times whereas further south it should be a tad milder than what has been witnessed lately but blue skies aren't expected to prevail in many areas.

Timaru was the coldest part of the country with minus one degree this morning and at times the South Canterbury city has been shivering during the last 24 hours and was just one degree at 11am yesterday and the high eventually climbed to seven degrees whereas Alexandra was even colder and just managed to stay on the positive side of the ledger with two degrees yesterday.

This morning New Plymouth is already in the teens however a lively day could be instore for the Taranaki city as thundery showers could move in from time to time.

Relatively mild in Waitakere today, plenty of showers too totaling 6.4 mm, at timer quite heavy with the highest rate being 47 mm/hr.
High today was 14.4°C, down to 11.7°C now

Weather headlines

* Nelson has been hit hard by heavy rain and a few thunderstorms over the last 24-36 hours which has resulted in a few areas of surface flooding and road closures however most roads have now reopened in the region.

* Thunderstorms rattled a few areas of the upper north overnight however there has been marked decrease this morning but still the chance remains of further heavy showers and downpours with thunder over the next 36 hours.

* Auckland has seen some heavy showery activity this morning however winds eased earlier but may pick up this afternoon with the risk of few heavy showers remaining.

* Cantabrians have had areas of fog this morning which have kept the temperatures low so far today and some rain could move in over Mid and North Canterbury this afternoon.

* Temperatures have remained very low across much of the South Island this morning with Christchurch and Timaru just managing five degrees at midday, Lumsden zero and Gore and Oamaru struggling to creep up to one soliatry degree plus Wanaka and Queenstown has stalled at just two degrees.

* A majority of the rain is from Taranaki to Nelson and Marlborough at midday but other showery falls across Auckland and further south in Westport are also being reported.
