12.6°C this morning in Howick with a breezy NE blowing. It is 12 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. Overnight low was 6.6°C just after midnight before the breeze started picking up.

Warmer in Waitakere too, but the difference is significantly less, its 7.2°C now compared to 2.2°C this time yesterday. 
Cloud cover is increasing, expecting rain to develop.

New Plymouth: 9.7 degrees, NE breeze, cloudy, few spits of rain earlier on, very dark look to the day, so a bit of a shock to the system

Parkdale Tokoroa  Mon 18th June

An overnight low minimum of -1.6ºC right on midnight.  The temperature warmed from there to +0.8ºC at 7am rising quickly to 5.8ºC at 9:20am.

Some high cloud around - some alto stratus - flat layer with some very thin cumulus underneath.  The day is brightening nicely.  The breeze is 0~5km/hr mainly Easterly at the moment.

Rain has now begun falling for almost half of the country this morning and more places are likely to see the wet stuff before the day is out.
Big frosts have made roads slippery in some areas with reports of black ice in Southland, Central Otago and parts of the central North Island.Rain had started falling on some roads in Southland this morning and then freezing.
The Wairarapa has also felt the cold this morning according to our Facebook fan Helen,"Its #&@% freezing in South Wairarapa. Dead calm and that grey sky that dosent break and warm up. Our ground water table is up to peak winter levels already. All the ground is so soggy. :-( and more rain on the way".
Geoff in Auckland had noticed conditions throughout the night and this morning," Was 2 degrees in Henderson at 3am, but now up around 12-13, so any frost that may have been forming last night was gone by dawn. Just noticed minutes ago it was actually warmer outside than in the house, lol. Meanwhile, the rain is now just minutes away from Auckland".
Weatherwatch.co.nz believes the worst of the conditions in regards to wind and rain for Auckland won't be until some point this afternoon.
Nelson and Marlbrough has seen the rain move in this morning and parts of Otago and Southland as well. Canterbury saw some rain overnight in places but more could return later today but now appears unlikely as an arch is building.
Coldest temperatures in the south are Wankaka and Lumsden with just zero degrees and Timaru is just on one degree but that temperature should climb a little over the next few hours.

Raining in Auckland CBD and at home in Waitakere - nothing too much for the moment but its definitely looking grey and gloomy outside.  At home we've had 1.4 mm of rain so far (started at about 11.15 am) and we've reached a high of 12.7°C - that may be it for the day.

Update for Invercargill 1453hrs.

Cold and grey in the deepsouth. After another frosty night (-3.4) rain set in at about dawn and temp has only reached a high so far of 3.8c although it is slowly rising due to the warm front overhead. Spectacular clear night last night with Aurora Australis making a spectacular show over Southland.

The forecast Rain has finally arrived, but nothing on the Rain Gague yet, the wind has also picked up (15 - 25km) from the North and the Barometer is falling at 1.1hPa per hour.  It has been another of those Grey and Raw days up until now, Gas Heater has been going in the office all day so far and it is a toasty warm 21.3 in here comaprted with 12.5c outside.

Some heavy showers in Waitakere recently, rain first started falling from 11.15 am and the current total for the day has got up to 11.6 mm - our heaviest fall at 5.20 pm recording a rate of 137.2 mm/hr, pretty loud on the roof!
Temperature was around 13°C until that shower which has knocked us down to 11.4°C - maximum today has been 13.2°C around 3 pm.

The day started all right with a frost of -0.8ºC at 7am and then warmed up to 11.8ºC at 11:15 but then cooled and clouded over. By 14:50 it had started raining but finished by 18:25 with 10.4mm. Since 6pm the winds have got up and peaked at 45km/hr around 18:30.  Still fully overcast and moderate NNE winds 15-30km/hr.  Much milder tonight at around 11.5ºC.

It wasn't the prettiest of days across the country today and although not every region saw some rain or wind but tonight could have some moisture or wind waiting in the wings for some.

Blustery winds with rain and some localised downpours were the feature for numerous northern and western parts of the country and although conditions were gentler out east in the main it wasn't all that great.

Over the next couple of days it seems the west is more in the firing line whereas recently eastern areas have been dogged by a chilly southerly airflow.

Showers are expected to come and go and thunderstorms are also still in the picture with a burst possible this evening or tomorrow morning and then Wednesday could possibly deliver more.

WeatherWatch.co.nz weather analyst Aaron Wilkinson is not entirely happy about living in Christchurch presently as no thunder activity is likely in Canterbury and he's envious for those in the north and west of the country who could see some roll through."I'm a bit guttered as I love storms but hey we've had our share of weather events here lately" he says.

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes unsettled conditions over the next day or two should then give way to more settled conditions later in the week but the unstable atmosphere isn't looking live delivering glorious sunny skies to the nation as a whole just yet.

It's been surprisingly frosty over some parts of the country overnight however cloud, wind and rain is set to move across much of the nation today or tonight.

Temperatures have dipped just below freezing in Napier and Invercargill and Hamilton,Rotorua,Whakatane and Timaru are feeling the crunch with a temperature of zero first thing.Warmest areas have gone to Whangarei which is already in the teens and in the south, Nelson and Westport are around twelve degrees.

Cloud and some rain has moved over western areas of the Mainland overnight and these unsettled conditions are likely to become more widespread across the country throughout the day and also affect eastern districts from time to time but places such as Gisborne, Napier and Hastings might not see anything until this evening.

Winds and temperatures have also been on the rise inside the last few hours and it was only this time yesterday when morning frosts were recorded in many places and quite severe in central and southern districts with the coldest and remotest regions seeing the mercury top minus ten degrees.

This incoming system is set to bring rain, wind and some warmth but could also deliver some localised downpours and thunderstorms in the mix.

"The cold in the south is moving away a little this week after some very low temperatures in places" says weather analyst Richard Green" but it's the northern areas that will see more warmth however the rain is set to move in later this morning or closer to midday".

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes the rain at times today could make driving conditions challenging in northern and western areas and care is advised especially with following distances."When these downpous occur visibility can be drastically reduced and often the heaviest falls can surprise and with wintry conditions it can certainly be very gloomy"

Later in the week a southerly change is set to sweep up the Mainland however early indications are showing that snow amounts and levels aren't expected to be excessive.
