Waitakere
It's pretty grey and overcast with bit of very light drizzly stuff recently making the deck damp.  Overnight low was 5.6°C and up to 8.1°C now - my forecast high is just 11°C for today with cloud increasing.  Should be a better day tomorrow.

Grey start to the day, not as cold as the previous few days but not looking to get as warm either. Might get better if the sun decides to put in an appearance.

New Plymouth, 7 degrees, mix of Sun and cloud plus a moderate SE of around 30 km/hr.

I am at home today, so will light fire, if the Sun doesn't hurry up and take charge

Animal feedback: cat came inside, plonked herself in front of fireplace. She was puzzled, for it wasn't on.Then a shaft of sunlight hit a mat nearby, so she pounced on it!
Had 36 hrs without the fire on, and yesterday afternoon was cloudy, so it is about as cold as it gets inside in Winter without any form of heating: 12 to 12.5  degrees in most rooms, 11 in the bathroom and 10.5 in the laundry(the coldest, and most southerly.)

Still a clammy cold grey day here, trying to start spitting and I can see it has been having a shower up behind Te Puke, maybe even in Te Puke itself.
Temperature been up to 10.9, now at 10.6 - not a nice day by any stretch.

Beginning to look a little brighter in Waitakere, some sunshine filtering through, but still some dark grey clouds to our north and showers are still possible.  Temperature has reached 11.7°C a few minutes ago, and we've had 1.4 mm rain today so far.
Title: Friday's national forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 15, 2012, 03:28:16 PM
A southerly flow will keep southern and eastern regions of both islands a bit unsettled today.

On the South Island, from sea level up to about 400m, the precipitation should be rain.  Above 400m, look for light snow or flurries.  Government forecaster MetService has a Road Snowfall Warning in effect until 9am for Lewis Pass where 3cm to 6cm of snow may accumulate.  Porter’s Pass is also under a Road Snowfall Warning.  MetService says between 8 and 12cm of snow may accumulate by 2am Saturday.  The western sections of the South Island should be dry.

On the North Island, the precipitation may extend beyond the southern and eastern sections.  Auckland may get in on some shower activity this afternoon.  Taranaki and Waikato could also see some spotty precipitation today in addition to Wellington, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.'

Introduced out 5 month old Black and White kitten (Penny Puss . . . in Boots) to the gas heater in the office today, tried to pat the pilot light in the front but did not think that was any fun, took about a minute and she is currently sprawled out on my office floor in front of it.  What a Life!

Title: Cold weather easing, but showers & snow in Friday's forecast
Post by: OhauitiWeather on June 15, 2012, 09:01:15 PM
A large low to the north and another to the south east of New Zealand are both contributing to more wet weather for New Zealand today, especially coastal areas, with cold air in the South Island's east turning rain showers to snow flurries again predicts WeatherWatch.co.nz.

The weather news authority says snow showers will again fall around Canterbury to just a few hundred metres with the snow level rising to 400 metres today.

WeatherWatch.co.nz describes the current weather as being like the "depths of winter" despite the coldest weather usually not until July and August.

Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says the current very cold spell across many parts of the country is already showing signs of easing.  "It's certainly been a much colder start to winter than 2011 and as we predicted back in March it's partially due to intense highs stretching from north to south and dredging up cold air from near Antarctica".

"However computer guidance strongly supports the end of the southerly flow over the next day or so".

The current wind flow today will again push cold winds right into Canterbury and the lower North Island.

Christchurch is predicted to only reach 8 degrees today along with Wellington as the showery southerly continues.

In Auckland shower clouds will start to develop on both sides of the city with a 50 to 60% chance of showers in the afternoon and early evening before clearing for the weekend.

"The weather we're seeing in some parts of New Zealand is more typical of mid to late July and early August" says Mr Duncan.  "The shortest day of the year is still a week away and much like turning the air-con on in the car it takes a while to cool down - in weather terms that's usually the 4 to 8 weeks following the shortest day of the year".

Mr Duncan says the cold weather over the past two weeks is a bit like having summer's heat in early December instead of February.

"A cold start to winter doesn't mean it will continue this way and already the long range models show a shift away from southerlies to more westerlies and easterlies for next week".

WeatherWatch.co.nz says July may actually start off milder than June did due to June kicking off with temperatures well below average.

For Friday showers will continue to move around mostly coastal parts of the North Island, including a risk of showers for northern New Zealand.  Showers will also continue to affect eastern parts of the South Island but the general trend is for long dry spells to move in.

The weather over the weekend should continue to improve ahead of the next Tasman Sea front which is expected late Sunday or Monday.
