Tokoroa is coolish 4.1deg overnight, partly cloudy but calm - some flat grey alto stratus, a 0-5km breeze from the south.  A nice fine day. :)

Of interest is that although circumstances ENSO-wise were a bit different (no La Nina prior) NP had 1585 hrs of sun in the first 8 months of 1982, its highest ever for that period. The developing El Nino made the last 4 months of the year very much cloudier, but the annual total was still slightly above average. At the end of September NP led Gisborne by 201 hours, but for Oct-Dec Gisborne was 202 hours ahead.

Going to be interesting to see how this year pans out.Wind wise, there seems to have been a singular lack of strong cold, dry SE winds so far- the sort of day where one burns a week's worth of firewood in 24 hrs

I think the lack of strong cold SE would reflect the very anticylonic conditions overall in autumn, especially in April and May.

Port Robinson 8.55am
Low Cloud, blustery chill southerly with max in the last hour of 24kmh. Temperature 5.8° with the maximum projected only 7°. Definitely indoor day.

Remember there may also be a reduction due to topography? I think we talked about that last winter but can't remembr what was concluded, if anything.

Norfolk Island 28mm of rain and yesterday - mainly overnight and it blow a gail alnight 35-40 knot guests.  I sometimes wake up if the wind stopped because it was so quiet.  warm morning almost 17`C.

I do remember, and I said I would endeavor to take a photo of the stations location. I haven't done that, but I will.
from what I can see there's nothing I would think that would affect it - there is a line of trees ~30-40m to the west. As for topographic affects, the rangers are a significant distance away. But i'll try to take some pics this week and you can have a look.

The trees might be significant, since your deficit relative to other Coast centres is quite big in winter, less so in other seasons. If the instrument mounting is not very high that could also contribute. There are 3 sites in the North Island where the EWS instrument is lower than the manual one was, and the totals obtained are lower than the old ones - a contrast to most cases where EWS has replaced manual.

Cold snap settles over both islands - nzherald.co.nz (http://www.nzherald.co.nz) - 11.00am
Snow is forecast for parts of both islands today, as a cold southwest flow moves up the country.
MetService forecasts the cold snap is preceding a ridge of high pressure which is expected hang around for the next few days.
Strong southwesterlies and snow showers have eased about exposed coastal hills from the Catlins to the Otago Peninsula, as well as Banks Peninsula.
Snow showers have also eased in Southland and eastern Otago overnight, however snow is forecast to continue until this afternoon for Banks Peninsula, with a further 5-10cm possible above 500 metres this morning and early afternoon.
Meanwhile the North Island is also forecast to get some snow showers, with snow showers forecast for both the Desert Road and the Rimutaka Hill Road.
From 3pm to midnight 1-2cm could accumulate on the Desert Road above 600 metres, while the Rimutaka Hill Road could receive the same amount from 1pm to 11pm.

Light snow has begun to fall on the Rimutaka Hill Rd.
A snow warning was issued yesterday for the road, with 2cm of snow predicted to fall to 400m from 1pm, MetService said yesterday.
Metservice meteorologist Stephen Glassy said the snow was not expected to be too serious, but was definitely falling.
A cold southerly was expected to sweep the country for much of the week, with a ridge of high pressure moving on to the country on Saturday.
Snow was also expected on the Desert Rd, with flurries in the afternoon and evening.
Showers were expected to develop this afternoon in the capital and the temperature range was expected to be between 5 and 9 degrees celcius.
Wellington city got its first real taste of winter late last month when a hailstorm lashed the city, but snow has fallen on the Rimutaka hills already this year on May 17.
Sergeant Peter Theobald from the Police Central Communications Centre said motorists should take care, use chains where necessary, and avoid unnecessary travel.

I think any deficiency is likely caused by the large amount of fog we get in Reefton during winter. In May for example, we didn't have a single clear fogless day. this morning was the first we've had all winter and that was because there was a decent breeze blowing.
the majority of the "sunny" winter days have fog till atleast late morning, and sometimes it sticks round all day.

Howick - a mostly cloudy start with a mild 11.1ºC low. Some sun broke through but there has been a layer of high cloud all day. Max of 14.9ºC. SW breeze has just turned SSE.

Bitter cold southerly has not let up today.
High of 11.7 °C at 2.00ish and now heading back down again.
Blasting fire at one end of house and a Gas heater at the other :)

After a slightly grey start to the day, its cleared and cooling off quite rapidly in Waitakere.  Temperature is now dropping past the overnight low, currently at 7.7°C and falling at a rate of approx 1.4°C per hour at the moment.  Our high today was 13.6°C, just a few tenths off my forecast high of 14°C
