I don't really know what it is. Just spotted it as I went out the front door. I have never seen anything like that before. Maybe someone can enlighten us.

That has to be a jet contrail - the condensation trail left behind a jet.  Sometimes they disappear rapidly, sometimes they don't and can spread out - basically dependent on the upper air conditions where the jet is cruising.  This one shows the flight path of the plane changing in direction.

Must not have been very much wind as it stayed there for ages.
Thanks for the explanation. I've never seen a vapour trail like this before. Quite spectatular.
