There wasn't anything wrong with the wooden windows that I had other than they let air in around the edges and heat out through the thin, 77 year old glass.
So I went for new ones: aluminum ones but opted only to replace the sashes and non opening windows.
That way, I hoped to retain the look, from the street, that they look roughly the same as before.
Inside, the timbers remain as well.

And from the inside:

Looking good!

Thanks Rupert. The job is a mission (and not cheap, let's face it, but should be warmer, that's for sure!)

Any double glazing (might not be necessary)?

No. I thought long and hard about double glazing. The enemy here is wind.
And the other thing was, that I read some very critical comments about double glazing in NZ and its long term quality here.

Consumer NZ did a very interesting article on double glazing recently. Looked at cost vs return for a number of scenarios. Even compared r values. Wooden windows actually came out well against our aluminum frames. Very difficult to get value out of retrofitting on to them as the al transfers the heat so well. Good curtains seemed to be most important

The retro fitted windows look really nice, are you going to replace them all in time?
It is now mandatory in Western Bay of Plenty to have all double glazed windows in any dwelling. Good quality Curtains will still be required I suspect.

I am replacing all windows in the house. It has quite few for its age. Luckily the place was well designed for the sun- unusual for 1935!
I always have thermals, plus blinds under those.

Niceeeee

Thanks Babs

It's all done. What a difference! 25 full size opening windows, 19 opening fan lights, 14 fixed panes.
And neatly fixed into the individual wooden frames of the originals!
No more drafts! No more massive heat loss through 78 year old glass!

Excellent!

Treat yourself to a beer Tom!

Thank you gentlemen and ladies.... :)
-
Now you will have to get them from the fridge instead of pre chilling them on the window sill.
