Description: Here's a pic from lastnight for you. These aurora only lasted about 10mins. They were mainly subvisual but they did start to become brighter and a pink pillar was visible to the naked eye but then faded quickly.

| March 10, 2012, 10:39:57 PM It all depends on the Kp index and how far the interplanetary magnetic field is tipped south. Last night the Kp index was 7 (strong) and the magnetic field was about -17 south. It is very possible for auroras to be visible further North. Auroras have been spotted up in Auckland before.... Mind you, the Kp index was 9 (severe) and the magnetic field would have been something in the order of -50 south.
I could see the pink columns moving across the southern sky, I only wish the moon wasn't out at the time  |
