Unidentified rotating structure
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: This appeared in the convection street over Paraparaumu in the high winds yesterday. I don't know what it was, but it had some good horizontal rotation to it, turning around like a merry-go-round. It looked like a big white meso cylone! White on white is very hard to get a decent shot of!  Convection street was from Kapiti Island and contained some BIG C. congestus. Massive Pileus formed as the street hit the hills. Very high winds from the W here and Paraparaumu yesterday. Any thoughts on what this rotating thing could be?

I assume you are discussing the bulk cloud in the centre and left, or was it the smaller round ball shaped cloud to the lower right?  The sky can be fascinating as you watch it develope and change and morph into something else. You get to see the itneraction with the mountains quite frequently, both from on shore westerlies and the easterlies and sou-easterlies coming over the ranges.  Thanks for sharing.  I hope someone else can help discover what was going on.

Thanks. Yes it is that one in the centre-left. It was turning round  and round, like a merri-go-round. Hard to photograph, but rather neat to watch.
