SE's that drop strange things
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: SE's often drop strange things over us, so much so I have come to watch them like a hawk! They can deliver funnel clouds, mammatus, water spouts and even the occasional spout which has come inland as a twister. The orographic ones seem to be worse for it than the ones straight off Cook. 12 September 2012 was one such day, a number of unusual structures came down from convection over the hills. For the life of me, I have been unable to find out what this bright orange structure was, so just presume it as a hail core ... even though none fell.

Just to add, the wind was ferocious, even with a ski jacket on I couldn't stand it for long, bitterly cold and blasting. When this thing disappeared as it grew dark, the wind calmed down.

Certainly some instability there with some updrafts; and, judging by your comments, very cold.  So it seems you did have the right conditions assuming a freezing level overhead, for generation and growth of hail.
