My partner and I stayed a month in the nearby camping ground (is it still there?) August 1995. It was the wettest August in 100 years raining 27 out of 31 days. I guess the place has grown over the intervening 17 years though your photo brings back some memories.

That was incredibly bad luck Tony - it was also the wettest August on record in Cairns, with about 140mm - and August is the driest month of the year on average in both places (average sun about 71% of possible). We had lovely weather with not a drop of rain. The town has grown quite a bit (we were there briefly in 1996) but in a tasteful way, with attractive streets and no tall buildings. Our accommodation a couple of blocks from the main street was superb, and not unduly expensive by today's standards. Partner enjoyed the shopping!

As a weather PS, I think 1995 was the August Sydney had its lowest ever rainfall in a month - nil.

Our holiday weather luck has not always been that good - we spent several days in Feb 1997 in Nelson in the most unsettled week of the whole year there!
