Yes, though a redeeming feature in the Makara region beyond Karori - among the sterile look of pine and macrocarpa - is the regenerating native bush coming through gorse, getting some initial benefit of shelter. It takes over later, but it's a slow process. The hills towards the south coast are also slowly taking on a better look.

I have seen photos of Tauhine taking over in that type of terrain not far from Karori (Dad used to call it Ta-whine or that sort of pronunciation).  It's a distorted woody shrub with tiny dense grey leaves and whitish flowers and can grow to 3m tall.  It is the first storey like gorse and allows the larger trees to grow in protection and then gets over-grown later.

Gorse gives homes to the giant Wetas also, plus bringing the bees to our part of the hill-top.

Our forefathers obviouly thought it would be a good addition to the New country to be used a hedges, little did they know that the gorge or furze as its called in the Home Country, loves the conditions and climate of our fair country.  It does make good firewoood and kindling, crackles a bit though.

That's a grand view Rupert, I captured a photo of it on a clear day and it was magical.

Didn't know that about the wetas ... must look out for the Tauhine. Really looking forward to revisiting this area on sunny day as time permits.
