I am guessing he pruned it first, hence the bare boughs below.  So the saw actually cut the boughs off safely as well.  
An interesting looking device - looks like an army quality device!

Normally The hedgecutter has a lethal rotating flat blade, but the saw attachment is an optional attachment especially when trimming close to glasshouses etc. He ended up cutting the whole thing down to about a 3m stump. It's the first time I'd seen them tackle a tree. The machine is just a 2 wheel drive truck armourplated. Weighs about 17tons.

Good riddance to the tree - doesn't look as if it had much scenic value anyway.
