| May 20, 2012, 06:18:57 PM A bleak place to settle!! I mean very open with not much weather protection and not much growth possible in the ground soil wise.
Lovely depth of field, some cameras can't handle the excess light and it may have been the case, it looks a little overexposed, but thanks for the scene - places I have never been ! |

| May 20, 2012, 08:12:03 PM Thanks - yes, the boulders are all large, and even larger near the Tasman glacier terminal.
Re "settlement" - just a term really, it's a jump-off point for mountaineering and sightseeing. Not much population outside of those at the hotel. It's warmer than you would expect for its altitude of 765m ASL - mean annual temp 8.8C. Some of inhabited Scotland is colder:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/averages/7100_1km/MeanTemp_Average_1971-2000_17.gif
Braemar in Scotland averages only 6.7C!
Mt Cook village is also relatively sunny for a mountainous area in NZ - almost 51% of the possible gets recorded on average (NZ towns range from about 59% to 39%).
Rainfall is quite high though, at about 4300mm - not excessively frequent, but big dumps from overspill boost the totals.
Re exposure - yes, that was a problem. Very bright afternon sun plus some glare off the snow as well. I have another zoomed in shot that shows how bright the snow field was. Last modified by: Rwood May 20, 2012, 08:13:54 PM |
