Title: Weather in the UK 2018.
Post by: Mark on January 14, 2018, 08:44:51 AM
Britain expecting snow and sub-zero temperatures | Daily Mail Online (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5266133/Britain-expecting-snow-sub-zero-temperatures.html)

Britain's dry and calm weekend of weather this weekend is expected to be brought to an abrupt halt as sub-zero temperatures and snow are forecast across large parts of the country.

Heading into Monday and Tuesday, the Met Office has issued an alert for snow and ice for all of Scotland and most of Northern Ireland as the calm weather of the weekend takes a turn for the worse.

Up to four inches could fall over those two days, with forecasters warning of blizzards and frequent lightning strikes, which could cause power cuts and mass travel disruption.

Temperatures around the country are expected to plummet following this week's relatively mild weather, with some parts of the country expected to be gripped by lows of -6C next week.

Patchy mist and cloudy conditions are expected for many tomorrow, although there will be sunny spells in south-west England throughout the day.

People in the south-east of England and London have been warned to use as little water as possible due to burst pipes caused by the extreme weather of recent days.

Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Affinity Water issued a joint statement this evening urging 13million people who still have access to water to use it sparingly.

Citing 'significant' numbers of people being left without water, the companies have advised people take short showers not baths and only use dishwashers containing full loads. There has been an increase in leaks across networks as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma recede.

The joint statement said: 'We are putting as much extra water as we

Title: Firefighters from Seven Counties Fight Greater Manchester Moor Fires
Post by: JennyLeez on July 04, 2018, 08:13:27 PM
Crews from across northern England deployed to tackle ‘rapidly developing’ blazes.

Firefighters from across the north of England and Midlands have travelled to Greater Manchester to help control fires that have destroyed at least 2,000 hectares (4,940 acres) of moorland over the past week.

Crews from Cumbria, Tyne and Wear, Nottingham, Humberside and Warwickshire joined teams from Lancashire and Greater Manchester tackling fires in Saddleworth, east of Manchester, and on Winter Hill, north-west of Bolton.

Two large-scale fires merged on Saturday due to increasing wind speed, and a major incident was declared as crews tackled the blaze. Lancashire fire and rescue service said it was dealing with “a rapidly developing, aggressive fire across all vegetation types, including woodlands”.

Fires on Winter Hill and Scout Road near Bolton have merged, with pedestrians and motorists urged to stay away from the scene. Twenty-two fire crews had been working on the blaze since 4.30am on Sunday, Lancashire fire and rescue said.

Title: Wildfires Highlight Importance of UK's Peatlands
Post by: JennyLeez on July 04, 2018, 08:19:14 PM
Moorland plants fulfill a vital role by locking away huge amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.

The wildfires in Lancashire and Greater Manchester are a disaster, not least because of the blot on the landscape they will leave behind once the flames are out. Although the hot dry weather is clearly to blame, so too is damage over the years from drainage that dried out the peat and turned it into a powder keg.

Peatlands may not look glamorous but they are a hugely important national treasure. They help prevent floods by soaking up rain like a sponge, and can hold about 20 times their own weight in water. And more than 70% of Britain’s drinking water comes from peatlands, feeding into supplies for 28 million people.

The plants in peatlands absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, locking away staggering amounts of carbon – about 5.5bn tonnes, more than half the country’s entire carbon storage – and that helps curb climate change. In comparison, British forests store only 150m tonnes of carbon. However, damaged moorlands do the opposite, releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gases, made even worse when smoke particulates enter the atmosphere.

Britain has some of the finest peatlands in the world, but they need protection. They need to be kept wet and prevented from being drained for farming or development, or dug up for garden compost.

Britons descended on beaches today to take advantage of the last remnants of sunshine ahead of an Arctic blast this evening. Chills of -7C are expected to take hold this weekend, with freezing conditions and even snow expected in some parts of the country. This morning was the coldest of autumn so far and many woke up to frost on their lawns after temperatures plummeted to -3.4C overnight on Friday. Much of the country, including Yorkshire (bottom left) and Wiltshire (top left), woke up to spots of frost on Saturday. Despite the cold start dozens of people made the most of the clear skies and headed to the beach in Brighton (right) where temperatures reached the mid-teens by the afternoon
