Upper North Island

Sunny spells and some increasing cloud with northwesterly winds building, a weak front moves in from the west late afternoon bringing a few patchy showers to most although the odd shower doesn’t arrive in Northland till evening. Some areas may remain mostly dry during the course of this front. All showers clearing around midnight as winds change westerly.

Lower North Island

Gusty northwesterly winds in the east with warm temperatures and some high cloud, a few brief spells of rain may spread from the west in the morning for the Wairarapa then in the afternoon further north. In the evening winds ease and they may tend a little more to the west. In the west including the Central North Island expect some rain from morning with northwesterly winds then clearing in the afternoon with a westerly change. A few sunny spells develop in the afternoon and there is the chance of a shower or two remaining on western coastlines. Wellington will see a few morning showers then clearing to sunny spells in the afternoon, strong to gale northerlies ease after midday.

Upper South Island

Mostly sunny in the east and about Nelson with gusty west to northwesterly winds, temperatures will be relatively mild but only getting into the mid to late teens. There is the chance of an early morning showers for Nelson and Marlborough. For Canterbury south of Banks Peninsula right on the coastline there is the risk of a heavy shower or two later in the afternoon with some hail. The West Coast can expect heavy showers and westerly winds, some may be heavy and thundery with hail south of about Greymouth.

Lower South Island

Showers about Southland and Central Otago, some heavy and thundery with hail. Gusty westerlies tend more southwest during the afternoon. Sunny to start about coastal Otago, late afternoon west to southwest winds bring heavy showers with lightning and hail then clearing later in the evening or around midnight.

Mention regarding snow:

Some snow falls in Southland during the day to 300m then perhaps 200m for a time in the evening before clearing around midnight.

The snow level will be 400m for Central Otago with a chance of flurries to 300m at times.

Coastal Otago sees snow to 400m (possibly 300m at times) as a disturbed period of showers moves over late afternoon then clears later in the evening.

Expect some heavy snow in the mountains of Fiordland to 300m then clearing later in the evening.

Further north along the Southern Alps expect snow flurries to 500m, possible 400m at times. The snow level lifts to 800m around the mountains of Buller.
