Heavy rain is expected to drench parts of the South Island overnight.
MetService has issued a severe-weather warning for Westland as an active frontal system moves across the Tasman Sea and is expected to lie over Westland tomorrow night.
The system will bring a period of heavy rain and thundery rain to the West Coast and the Southern Alps.
MetService said the heaviest falls were forecast for the Westland ranges south of Otira, where up to 150 millimetres of rain was expected tomorrow.
Coastal areas may get 50mm to 80mm of rain.
MetService said rivers and streams could rise rapidly, and slips and flooding were possible.
Canterbury could expect heavy rain near the lakes and rivers south of Arthur's Pass tomorrow.
Cool southerly winds were likely to spread to the remainder of Canterbury on Wednesday, with some heavy falls possible on the foothills.
