« on: February 21, 2012, 08:55:41 AM »
June 1980:   Throughout New Zealand June was generally wetter and milder than usual. This was the 3rd consecutive month with mean monthly pressures above normal. Pressures were especially high to the south and east. There was a greater frequency than usual of easterly winds. Some heavy stock losses were reported at the beginning of the month, when heavy rain caused major flooding of the Taieri Plains area.

Rainfall: The only areas with below normal rainfall were parts of Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa, the West Coast, and Southland. In Wanganui and Manawatu some areas had less than 50% of their average rainfall. The wettest areas were Poverty Bay, northern Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Marlborough, southern Canterbury, and Otago. In the latter provinces some stations recorded more than 250% of their average rainfall. Early on the 4th heavy rain began to fall in southern Canterbury, Otago and parts of Southland, resulting in major flooding of the Taieri Plains between Mosgiel and Henley, and also near the mouth of the Clutha River. Approximately 2000 people were evacuated from their homes on the Taieri Plains. Flood waters cut most of the state highways and minor roads in the area, and the airport was closed when the buildings and runway were flooded. At Musselburgh (Dunedin) 119mm were recorded from 9am/4th to 9am/5th, its highest one day fall since April 1923 (229mm). Widespread heavy rain during the afternoon of the 11th caused flooding in Wellington and New Plymouth. Worst affected were the central business area in New Plymouth, and two suburbs to the south and west of the city. Brooklands Park recorded more than 70mm between 9am/11th and 9am/12th.
