December 1979:  In December pressures were below normal over the whole of New Zealand, more especially in the South Island. Winds were predominantly from the westerly quarter, with a greater frequency than usual of strong gusty winds. At Kelburn there were 11 days with gusts of at least 96 km/h, the highest for December since records began in 1953. Conditions were wetter than usual throughout most of the country, with temperatures slightly above normal.

Rainfall: The only areas with rainfall below normal for the month were parts of Bay of Plenty, northern Hawkes Bay and coastal Canterbury. The wettest areas were Poverty bay, inland Canterbury, Otago, and parts of Southland where rainfalls of more than 100% above normal were recorded. Apart from heavy rain in the South Island at the beginning of the month, the wettest period in most districts was from the 26th until the end of the month. On the 2nd heavy rain fell in many western and southern districts of the South Island. The heaviest falls were mainly during the afternoon and evening. At Otira 215mm were recorded in 12 hours and at the Hermitage, Mt Cook 537mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 3rd, the station’s highest one day total since October 1942 (559mm). The Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers reached their highest peak since 1957 after this period of heavy rain.

Some monthly totals (mm): Cape Reinga 153, Hamilton 148, Taumarunui 269, Gisborne 147, Wairoa 222, Kelburn 138, Hokitika 360, Cropp Hut 1736, Kaikoura 139, Mt Cook 1447, Tekapo 119, Queenstown 159, Roxburgh Power Station 126; Whakatane 45, Waipukurau 39, Christchurch 21, Timaru 37.

Temperatures:  The only areas with mean temperatures 0.5C to 1.5C below normal, were parts of Canterbury, inland Otago, and Fiordland. Throughout the rest of New Zealand they were above average by about 0.5C, and in coastal Canterbury by more than 1C. There was a very cold spell at the end of the month from the 28th to 30th with maximum temperatures about 5C below average in many areas. From the 24th-26th daytime temperatures were above normal by more than 5C in districts on the east coast of both islands.

33.3C maximum at Waiau on the 17th, -3.6C minimum at Moa Creek on the 8th.

Sunshine:  Total sunshine hours for the month were above normal over most of the country, the main exceptions being the Southern Lakes, Central Otago and Wellington with 30 hours less than usual, and Nelson (15 hours less). At Christchurch 263 hours were recorded, the highest for December since 1962. Some stations in Northland and Auckland had in excess of 50 hours more sunshine than usual.
