NZ weather summary May 1971
« on: March 16, 2012, 07:16:46 PM »
May 1971: Mild and rather wet. Good growth was reported in most areas, but in Canterbury and western and southern districts of the North Island some pastures were still recovering from the effects of several months of dry weather. Pressures were comparatively high to the south and southeast and low over the Tasman Sea. As in the 6 previous months, the general wind flow showed an excess of easterly to northeasterly winds.

Rainfall: Rainfall was above normal over most of the country, mainly by about 50%. The Kaingaroa Plains southeast of Rotorua received more than double the normal value. The main area with rainfall below normal, by about 40%, was Canterbury. A small but rather intense depression off the coast of Northern Hawkes Bay caused heavy rain with slips, considerable flooding, and disruption of transport, in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay on the 3rd and 4th.

376mm rainfall at Kawerau, 230mm at Gisborne, 32mm at Adair.

Temperatures: Mean temperatures were above normal, mainly by 1C-2C. This was the 12th month in succession with temperatures warmer than normal from Christchurch northward. Most eastern and southern districts had exceptionally warm weather in northerlies for the first fortnight followed by a decidedly cooler spell in southerlies from the 15th to 26th.

23.6C at Whangarei on the 5th, -8.3C at Moa Creek on the 22nd.

Sunshine: East of the ranges in the North Island sunshine was 30-60 hours below normal. Masterton’s 70 hours was its second lowest for May. Sunshine was also well below normal in Otago, about Cook Strait, and about Christchurch. By contrast, Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Waitomo, besides the northwestern part of the Southland Plain, were favoured with 30-60 hours above normal.

The E/NE bias continued but the dryness that prevailed in places like Wellington for up to 7 months was broken in many cases.

Quite a decent amount of rain for Kawerau....
"Send more beer!"

Yes indeed. The relatively cloudy and wet pattern in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay repeated in several of the remaining months, leaving Napier with its second cloudiest year and a top 6 rainfall reading in a very long record.
