NZ weather summary September 1968
« on: August 13, 2018, 04:41:06 PM »
September 1968:  September was marked by a somewhat greater frequency of westerly winds than usual. It was comparatively cool, with lower rainfall than normal. In parts of Canterbury conditions were reported to be very dry. In Southland and Otago a cold spell with snow from the 8th-10th caused serious losses of sheep. On the 13th parts of Otago and Canterbury, with Cook Strait, were buffeted by exceptionally strong northwesterly gales. Trees were uprooted in some inland districts of South Canterbury and North Otago.

Rainfall:  Over the greater part of the North Island and in most of Canterbury and Otago, east of the high country and the Southern Lakes district, rainfall was only 3/4 of average. However, over the remainder of the South Island it was somewhat above average. Coastal Southland had a surplus of more than 50% and Invercargill had its highest September rainfall for over 30 years, of 5.17”. In the North Island rainfall was somewhat above average in Auckland and parts of Waikato and also in some areas of Taihape and Hawkes Bay. [Invercargill exceeded that amount 3 times in the next 4 years, and at least 8 times since in total].

Temperatures: Temperatures were below average, mainly by 1F. A cold spell with southerlies on the 26th-27th brought snow to low levels in some eastern districts of the South Island and in some southern and central districts of the North Island.

Sunshine: Sunshine was mainly close to average. However, it was about 30 hours above average in Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay, and also near the coast from Kaikoura to Oamaru. It was below average by the same amount in the Rotorua-Taumarunui-Taihape area and also in parts of Buller.

[Some totals:  Kaitaia 177, Kerikeri 161, Whangarei 150, Auckland 157, Tauranga 184, Whakatane 184, Taupo 155, Opotiki 160, Hamilton 150, New Plymouth 173, Masterton 156, Gisborne 208, Napier 191, Wairoa 207, Paraparaumu 158, Ohakea 156, Palmerston North 116, Levin 134, Wellington 166, Stratford 164, Ohakune 111, Wanganui 158, Westport 125, Hokitika 156, Greymouth 111, Haast 140, Riwaka 204, Nelson 200, Blenheim 216, Grassmere 191, Kaikoura 198, Mt Cook 124, Mt John 164, Methven 188, Christchurch 200, Tekapo 175, Timaru 174, Waimate 175, Omarama 178, Dunedin Aero 149, Dunedin 145, Oamaru 178, Queenstown 153 Alexandra 170, Invercargill 118, Campbell Is 58, Chatham Is 141.]

Not a bad total of sunshine hours for the Chathams, by the look.
"Send more beer!"

Yes, following August's record high, it's about 30 above average. However Oct-Dec won't look so good for them ...
