NZ weather summary November 1967
« on: July 26, 2018, 07:27:33 PM »
November 1967: November was very wet. It was also cloudy in the west and windy; but it will probably be remembered mainly for the exceptionally heavy snowfall on the 16th-17th in the Mackenzie country and surrounding areas of inland South Canterbury and North Otago. This snow caused considerable losses of sheep, beside flattening crops and disrupting transport and communications. In many districts the rain was welcomed after the previous dry weather, and growth was generally good. However, shearing and haymaking were adversely affected. Four tornadoes were reliably reported: near New Plymouth on the 19th; in the Feilding-Woodville area on the 23rd; at Greymouth on the 24th; and in the Remuera-Meadowbank are of Auckland city on the 25th. All four did some damage, the last wrecking a hospital at Remuera.

Rainfall:  Rainfall was more than double the average over most of the South Island and Stewart Island; also over most northern districts of the North Island. The Canterbury high country about and to the southwest of Lake Coleridge received more than 4 times the average value. A number of stations in various parts of the country had their highest November total, including Half Moon Bay in Stewart Island, with 13.33”. Otira had 52.81”. The only area with rainfall appreciably below average was part of inland western Southland.

Temperatures: South of a line from Greymouth to Christchurch temperatures were mainly 3F-6F below average. Elsewhere they were mainly close to average. [An unusually sharp contrast]. The snowfall in the Mackenzie country was reliably reported to be 2-3 feet deep in places and several times as deep in drifts. In some areas it was the heaviest in living memory in any month of the year. Temperatures were greatly depressed by snow lying for several days, and the mean temperature of 43.7F at the Hermitage was lower than any previously recorded there in November or even October. [Pipped by October 1968. Just 12 days after the snow, many places in the east had temperatures of 24-27C].

Sunshine: Sunshine was below average by up to 70 hours except in eastern districts and most of Southland, where it was close to average. In Buller and most of Westland it was the cloudiest November on record, with 119 hours at Westport and 106 at Hokitika.

[Some totals:  Kaitaia 184, Kerikeri 177, Whangarei 164, Auckland 167, Tauranga 182, Whakatane 182, Taupo 170, Opotiki 178, Hamilton 168, New Plymouth 172, Masterton 172, Gisborne 233, Napier 212, Wairoa 216, Paraparaumu 174, Ohakea 186, Palmerston North 149, Levin 158, Wellington 197, Stratford 181, Ohakune 129, Wanganui 188, Westport 119, Hokitika 106, Greymouth 95, Haast 114, Riwaka 203, Nelson 192, Blenheim 224, Grassmere 199, Kaikoura 191, Mt Cook 82, Mt John 196, Methven 198, Christchurch 197, Tekapo 210, Timaru 212, Waimate 206, Omarama 201, Dunedin Aero 185, Dunedin 168, Oamaru 204, Queenstown 156, Alexandra 218, Invercargill 185, Campbell Is 111, Chatham Is 179].

The November with the (in)famous snowfall. Interesting temperature contrast as described above - near normal versus a substantial deficit.

Puts this November's cold weather and South Island snowfalls into perspective.

What a miserable month, for sure!

Pretty strong east-west contrast though. Quite sunny on the eastern fringes. A  wild month for sure though.
