NZ weather summary December 1966
« on: July 16, 2018, 10:22:17 AM »
December 1966: Over the greater part of the country December was wetter, cooler, and more cloudy than usual. A particularly cold spell, accompanied by considerable rain and persistent cloud, spoilt the last week of the month in many districts, especially Wairarapa, Wellington, Manawatu, and parts of Hawkes Bay. In these areas farmers found the weather rather too wet; elsewhere conditions were more favourable, except that in Otago and parts of Canterbury it was too dry.

Rainfall: In the North Island, south of a line from Wanganui to Wairoa, rainfall was mainly more than double the average value; and on the coast of southern Hawkes Bay and northern Wairarapa it was as high as 4.5 times the average. In these parts more than half of the rain fell in the last 4 days of the month, and totals were the highest for many years. Over the remainder of the North Island and also in Nelson, Marlborough, North Canterbury, the West Coast, and parts of Southland, rainfall was somewhat above average. However, in other South Island districts it was somewhat below average. In parts of Central and North Otago it was only half the average. A squall-line, which crossed the country during the 10th-11th, was accompanied by thunderstorms and heavy hail in widely separated areas from Canterbury to Hawkes Bay and Waikato. In parts of Banks Peninsula some of the hailstones were the size of golf balls.

Temperatures:  Mean temperatures were more than 1F below average in 3 main areas: Waikato, with Rotorua and Taupo; Manawatu, Wellington and Wairarapa; South Canterbury and North Otago. Elsewhere temperatures were close to average.

Sunshine: Sunshine was below average by 20-80 hours over about half the country, in an area extending from Wanganui and Dannevirke to Hokitika and Oamaru. Nelson, with only 166 hours, received far less than had ever previously been recorded there in December; and Wellington also had its cloudiest December on record, with only 175 hours [Nelson low now 164 hours in 2001; Wellington’s record significantly lowered with 149 hours in 1992, and equalled on several other occasions].

[Some totals: Kaitaia 226, Kerikeri 218, Whangarei 215, Auckland 241, Tauranga 210, Whakatane 225, Taupo 209, Opotiki 201, Hamilton 226, New Plymouth 197, Masterton 183, Gisborne 250, Napier 231, Wairoa 235, Paraparaumu 157, Ohakea 151, Palmerston North 149, Levin 143, Wellington 175, Stratford 203, Ohakune 156, Wanganui 165, Westport 158, Hokitika 163, Greymouth 134, Haast 208, Riwaka 204, Nelson 166, Blenheim 200, Grassmere 189, Kaikoura 184, Mt Cook 135, Mt John 187, Methven 148, Christchurch 178, Tekapo 198, Timaru 112, Waimate 105, Dunedin Aero 167, Dunedin 150, Oamaru 110, Queenstown 220, Alexandra 215, Invercargill 210, Campbell Is 111, Chatham Is 160].

A particularly poor month in the area described in the sunshine report. Invercargill did relatively well thanks to cool but sunny conditions in the last week (ridging in the south); Auckland and Gisborne did best of the main towns. The abysmal totals at Timaru, Waimate and Oamaru were not record lows - these are 90, 60 and 85 hours respectively! The average December sunshine duration at Waimate up until about 1960 was considerably lower than at Timaru and Oamaru, and I have not seen an explanation for this.
