NZ weather summary April 1967
« on: March 28, 2015, 06:12:29 PM »
April 1967: Winds from a westerly quarter were unusually frequent and they blew almost continuously during the last 16 days. In the North Island the weather was drier than usual and in the north and east also sunnier; in many areas the drier weather was appreciated after the previous wet months and farmers found it a good month. In the South Island it was wetter than usual and also more cloudy in some areas. Following several months of rather dry weather the additional rain was appreciated so here also farmers found April a favourable month. In parts of Canterbury and Otago the ground was still too dry.

Winds were particularly strong from about the 20th to the 25th, with many gales, especially from Cook Strait southward. Some particularly strong gales were reported on the 25th, especially about Cook Strait and Fiordland.

Rainfall:
In the South Island rainfall was mainly 50% above average. It was more than double the average in Fiordland, the Southern Lakes, and also most of the Alps, the high country of South Canterbury, and Central Otago. In some northern and eastern coastal districts, notably the Marlborough Sounds and the Christchurch area, rainfall was at least 25% below average. In the North Island rainfall was mainly 2/3 of average. Central districts together with Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland received less than half. In Wellington and southern Manawatu and on the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay coasts, rainfall was somewhat above average.

On the West Coast most of the rain fell in 2 periods: 6-8 April, in moist northerlies; and 19-26 April, in westerlies. In the Alps and Fiordland some areas received monthly totals of 35”-50”, of which 20-35” fell during 20-26 April, with serious flooding around Milford Sound and in parts of Westland. The highest total was 47.5” at Doubtful Sound, of which more than 36” fell during 19-25 April.

Temperatures: Temperatures were close to or a little above average over the whole country.

Sunshine: Eastern and northern districts of the North Island were favoured with 15-50 hours sunshine above average. Western and some inland districts together with Manawatu received 15-50 hours below average.

If the higher altitude West Coast rainfall sites (like Cropp) had been operating in 1967 their monthly totals would likely have ranged up to 2000mm or more.
