« on: May 10, 2018, 07:28:22 AM »
September 1960: September was unusually cloudy, especially in the North Island. Persistent northeasterly winds brought exceptionally wet weather to the Auckland province, adversely affecting the health of stock. Elsewhere conditions were favourable for stock and crops.

Rainfall: Rainfall was appreciably above average over most of the Auckland province and also in parts of Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Nelson and inland South Canterbury. It was mainly 2-4 times normal in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and northern Waikato; and over a considerable part of this area it was the wettest September on record. Elsewhere rainfall was close to normal, except in parts of Canterbury and Southland, which were drier than usual. Following heavy rain from the 10th-14th, serious flooding occurred in the Hauraki Plains on the 15th, with some flooding also in parts of Waikato and Northland. At Waitekauri, near Waihi, the monthly total exceeded 34”, of which 24” fell between the 10th and 15th.

Temperatures: Temperatures were 2F above average over most of the North Island from Wanganui and Napier northward and also in Nelson and on the West Coast. Elsewhere they were mainly close to average. Snow was reported in the high country of both islands on the 10th.

Sunshine:
In the North Island apart from Manawatu and Wellington, and in Nelson totals were 40-90 hours below average, and for many districts it was the cloudiest September on record. Auckland, Waihi, Rotorua and Taumarunui all received less than 100 hours. Elsewhere sunshine was mainly deficient by about 30 hours. However, Invercargill had a surplus of 21 hours.
