NZ weather summary January 1960
« on: May 08, 2018, 05:29:36 PM »
January 1960: Over the whole country January was a warm, windy month and except for the west coast districts south of Hokitika, generally very dry. The effect of rain which fell during the month was largely nullified in most areas by the drying effect of persistent winds from a westerly quarter. By the end of the month pastures in many areas were badly in need of rain. Fruit crops, however, were being harvested in good conditions.

Rainfall:  Rainfall was below average in the North Island except in Waitomo and northern Hawkes Bay where it was about average. In eastern districts of Northland it was only a quarter of average; over most of the rest of the North Island it was about 50% of average. Westland, the Southern Alps and parts of Southland had up to 50% more than average, but in all other South Island areas the rainfall was deficient, being only about half of average in Canterbury, the Wairau valley of Marlborough, and Nelson. Thunderstorms were reported in many parts of the North Island on the 6th. A rather violent thunderstorm affected western and southernmost districts of the South Island on the 28th-29th, with 13.5” in the 2 days at Milford Sound.

Temperatures: Temperatures were everywhere above average. In Nelson it was 4F-5F warmer than usual, while Central Otago and parts of Canterbury had departures of 3F-4F. Over the rest of the country it was generally 1F-2F warmer. Strong NW winds brought high temperatures to Canterbury in midmonth, Christchurch having a maximum of 97F (36.1C) on the 17th; Blenheim 94.7F on 17th; Christchurch Gardens had 97.2F {36.2C} in January 1963, but a huge leap from there to 41.6C on the 7th February 1973.

In the North Island temperatures over 90F were recorded during the 28-30th at several places in the Bay of Islands, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay [Kerikeri 93.7, Whakatane 94.0, Kawerau 96.2, Gisborne 96.1, Hastings 94.8].

Sunshine:
Sunshine was below average except in North Auckland, Nelson, Otago and parts of inland Canterbury. Greatest deficiencies were reported in Taranaki and inland areas from Taupo to Palmerston North.
