NZ weather summary December 1962
« on: May 17, 2018, 09:18:52 AM »
December 1962: In the South Island December was sunny and dry, and by the end of the month pastures were drying up in some areas, though the weather was generally favourable for stock and crops. In the North Island there was an unusually high frequency of winds from the northeast and east, with excessive rain in Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. In Bay of Plenty conditions were too wet for stock and crops, but in Hawkes Bay the additional rain was welcome.

Rainfall:  Rainfall was only half the average value over the South Island, except on the Kaikoura coast. It was also somewhat below average in most western districts of the North Island. Over the remainder of the North Island rainfall was above average. East of a line from Waihi to Taupo and Waipukurau it was mainly 3-6 times wetter than normal. Many places reported totals of 15” to 25”, most of which fell during two 3-day spells of heavy rain – the 2nd-4th and the 18th-20th. Tauranga (17.58”) and Rotorua (13.38”) both had their wettest Decembers on record, and the totals for the years at these two cities – over 80” at Tauranga and over 101” at Rotorua – were also far higher than any previously recorded.

Temperatures: Temperatures were 1F-2F above average in the South Island but close to average in the North Island. Eastern districts of the South Island experienced very warm temperatures from the 10th-14th. In contrast, Christmas Day in the south and Boxing Day further north were marred by the passage of a cold front with unseasonably cool temperatures. Snow fell on the ranges of both islands and was reported down to 1600 ft in Southland and Otago.

Sunshine:
The South Island was favoured with from 20-90 hours more sunshine than average; and for coastal and some inland districts of Canterbury and Otago it was the sunniest December in about 40 years of record, with totals ranging from 255 hours at Timaru to 320 hours at Lake Tekapo. Sunshine was also above average by 20-60 hours in western districts of the North Island. However, it was below average by 15-40 hours in Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty.

[Some totals: Te Hapua 226, Kaitaia 232, Kerikeri 210, Whangarei 208, Auckland 237, Tauranga 222, Whakatane 214, Taupo 198, Opotiki 195, Hamilton 232, New Plymouth 273, Masterton 218, Gisborne 213, Napier 214, Wairoa 209, Paraparaumu 264, Ohakea 233, Palmerston Nth 217, Levin 225, Wellington 252, Ohakune 217, Wanganui 240, Westport 253, Hokitika 241, Greymouth 220, Haast 257, Nelson 267, Blenheim 270, Grassmere 246, Kaikoura 242, Mt Cook 216, Methven 267, Christchurch 264, Tekapo 320, Timaru 255, Waimate 218, Oamaru 244, Omarama 275, Dunedin Aero 229, Dunedin 230, Queenstown 274, Alexandra 266, Invercargill 219, Campbell Is 114, Chatham Is 185].

I recall this month particularly well and had always thought of it as a sunny one for New Plymouth. Pleased to know that my memory has served me well on this occasion!

Well done! For the South Is in particular it was far better than most Decembers back then ... and a very pleasant one for 85% of the country.
